Both, I use Photoshop and I LIVESTREAM my artwork now.

NO REFRENCES ON ANY OF MY MEDIUMS FOR THE INTERNET.

Using references isn’t a bad thing, per se. Especially if you want to learn how something looks, it’s actually a helpful tool to improve your art.

However, that said; I recommend referencing from stock photos instead of other people’s artwork. There’s a lot of free to use stock photos all over the internet that you can use, free of charge.

Also, look up some anatomy tutorials on YouTube and follow them as best as you can. It’ll take some practice, but it’ll help in the long run with making your characters look better. You don’t even need to go with hyper realism; just trying to get proportions down can help tremendously.
