Hurricane Milton

About every model shows it will be a monster until it slams the coast of Florida and the land mass rips apart the storm system so it at best is a cat 2-3 on the moment of landfall. That is some good news indeed. It will break apart quite quickly.

Maybe I'm overly distrustful of computer models (projecting my poor programming skills, maybe), but isn't energy dissipation of that type pretty chaotic? I'm wary that they over-smoothed some of the interactions to keep the models from "blowing up" (technical term) or diverging too much.

Remember that the weather people get second tier supercomputers, after the nuclear weapons guys, and eventually they're probably going to get bumped down to third by the AI people. The training clusters they run now aren't the right architecture for weather, so that's why they aren't second right now.

This time around they are going for the phosphate mines. Florida's phosphate inudstry accounts for 80% of all phosphate used by the US: https://fipr.floridapoly.edu/about-us/phosphate-primer/phosphate-and-how-florida-was-formed.php

A large portion of it is mined exactly where the hurricane is about to hit.

The models have been pretty darn spot on - especially the European models. I’m not saying it won’t pack a punch but most models showing the direct hit to actually cause the storm to shred itself quickly so it most likely will be one hell of a start on Wednesday and “calm down” (relatively speaking) and off to the Atlantic it goes to die.

Anyways; the models come Tuesday morning will be very accurate so who knows between now and then what changes.

With the completely insulting response in NC, lets hope FL doesn't have to suffer the ignominy of being written off by the feds and the insult of a $750 payoff.
Buddy at this rate all FEMA will have left to give people in Florida is about $1.17 per person and a half-eaten pack of Bubble Yum.

Direct Hit Tampa Bay would be worst than Katrina. Tampa Bay hasn't had a direct hit since 1921. The bay is shaped like a funnel so the storm surge would accelerate onto land. There are tons of nogs, if they don't have food, water, internet for 72 hours, it will get nasty fast.
Temple Terrace is gonna be a warzone if the locals suddenly feel like this is their Katrina moment

I feel bad for Floridians - except, the Church of Scientology in Clearwater (may they all drown).

Tampa would be real sad to see the Church of Scientology decimated...yep...real crying shame that would be.
Clearwater is where the world's most powerful Scientologists gather to give others the SUPER POWER RUNDOWN that clears away the thetans that stop you from being god. They also have a time machine inside and the building is built to last an eternity. They'll be okay, and you would have too if you only paid a few million to the Church.

Most phosphates in the US (and world) comes from Morocco.

Milton took the gloves off this morning.

...NOAA HURRICANE HUNTERS FIND MILTON A MAJOR HURRICANE...

this change and update the forecast.

Oh god, it's 150mph at the surface level (as well as 146 knots elsewhere) and only just got reclassified to Cat 4. There's no way it doesn't reach Cat 5 by 2pm. What the hell.

(I'm well aware that Facebook isn't an incredible source. I've just been following as many meteorologists as I can in lieu of having the time to watch storm chasers. Please let me know if there's conflicting evidence from someone with the same amount of credibility.)

EDIT: Ninja'd at the exact second, yeesh

Milton may be going through an Eyewall replacement.

Holy shit, that's damn near Cat 4 territory. Wind speeds were 85mph when I went to bed. Crazy.

Wrote this out, went to make my coffee, come back, post.

Milton is now a category 4 hurricane, 2 hours after it was upgraded to a 3. The Air Force recon plane currently in the storm has found a pocket of 160mph surface winds which would equate to a 5 if the NHC chooses to trust it (surface wind measurements in recon flights are known to not be precisely accurate).
God damn it.
