Hyperdrive soon?

Use energy to punch a hole right through space-time to your destination and poof! No actually travel time.

I like this idea. That, or something like it - like a "jump drive" and the like, sometimes appears in fiction (like a certain series involving a "police box" that I'm not really familiar with).

Nasa's warp drive concept.
Are they actually working on an alcubierre drive? As in, are they actually putting some of their money into researching this thing? I've always heard that the warp bubble could technically exist, but it would be impossible to generate or dissipate one deliberately.

To my knowledge they're still trying to figure if a warp bubble would even be possible.

Maybe I'm being pessimistic here, but I doubt it will. It seems like nature just doesn't want you to go faster than light (or back in time), and enforces it with Hawking radiation.

I am in the camp that doesn't believe faster than light travel would come about until after a technological singularity.

A lot of this science is very theoretical and usually gets disproved really quickly. If we invented machines that could invent new technology, I think that is when actual faster than light travel might come about.

I'm not holding my breath though. It might very well be that FTL travel might be proven to be impossible in 100 years.
I really liked that show as a kid.

It's coming back. LeVar Burton successfully kickstarted it
