Honestly a third neutral conscience that's extra dimensional makes more sense than a real biological organism that's just The Greys or Little Green men. Having this element change form with human progression, to act as a mental prod to people in terms of introducing concepts makes practical sense.
Every day we're becoming more and more dependent of our control structures and less and less self reliant. We might as well be in the process of being enslaved by the aliens. Maybe the aliens have been grooming us to be a slave population who lives solely to consume product and is happy to live in pods. Maybe instead of colonizing us it is more cost effective to turn us into cog for some intergalactic superstructure.
In theory an advanced civilization could just build unmanned self-maintaining space drones that are programmed to groom civilization into becoming ripe for harvest. This would allow much waster potential for expansion because these drones would last much longer than any biological lifespan and would be cheaper than manned vessels. Maybe multi-generational manned space grooming operations are just unpopular and automation is better.
