Beta blockers are thought to prevent PTSD from developing when taken soon after an event like yours, could be worth mentioning to a doc. Being attacked really sucks, it's worse if it haunts you for years. I'm sorry that there are scummy piece of shit men who would do this.
yo that is excellent advice, thanks so much! i have another wound check on monday, i'll bring it up then. so far i'm doing okay but i think that's because the army of grandmas in my building has basically been a non-stop buffet, so it's hard to think about trauma in the face of pounds of homemade tamales and adobo, soooo something to head that off once i'm not able to ignore it anymore would be great.

thanks, dude. people fucking suck.

The key is to be comfortable and trained with your weapon. People often just buy weapons and think having them means they can use them effectively.
this is very good advice. it's easy to think "oh i'll get a weapon", but fuck, it was my knife he got me with in the first place. definitely have a lot of shit i'm going to do differently from here-on out.

As vile as /k/ can be, they have great infographics threads. Also the NRA has some great beginner's guides when it comes to self-defense with guns. Weapons retention is something you want to also study.

a weapon that you can shoot comfortably, repeatedly, inexpensively while fitting into your lifestyle (for program compliance, ie consistently keeping it in a ready state, being aware of it, practicing with it regularly) is why there is a plethora of weapons available for purchase. for very new shooters, especially women or smaller men, finding a fitting firearm is a task in itself. while explaining all the differences or offering a tutorial is beyond the scope of the question, i do recommend that if you do get a firearm, you choose one with these features:

1. 9x19mm Parabellum/Luger/NATO - this is a very widely used cartridge with over 100 years of history, is inexpensive, and comes in a wide variety of subtypes, and is the most commonly available cartridge among autoloading pistols. prefer to purchase the same 9x19mm ammunition that your local police approve of for duty or off-duty use.
2. a single-stack magazine - a smaller/thinner grip leads to more hand-to-grip contact on the frame of a firearm. this instills greater control of the weapon, more comfortable shooting, and ease of reach for controls. a comfortable gun is a gun you don't feel practicing with is a chore.
3. internal-only or easy-to-understand safety. an internal only safety is a firearm where safeties are completely internal and not user-activated. they often require a handgun be actively held and the trigger pulled than relying on some lever or additional action on the part of the shooter. that is a stress point you don't need to deal with in a defensive shooting. an easy to understand safety can be a simple push button safe/fire (Walther), a lever (Beretta/Stoeger Cougar), or frame mounted lever (CZ 75 Compact). some handguns have a de-cocker only, which merely lowers the hammer to a safe position (SIG P239).
4. a steel frame - heavy guns are controllable guns. it will tame recoil for newer shooters, instill confidence in a physically heavy item (which is a psychological benefit), and if stainless, is usually more forgiving of abuse (dropping it, lack of cleaning). (Smith and Wesson 3913).

for most women, i usually end up recommending a S&W 3913, a Glock 19 (more recently the Glock 43), or a P239. if you have a medium palm but long fingers, consider a Stoegar Cougar.

i tend to not recommend the Kahr or Bersa, because while they are decent pistols, the Kahr can be hit or miss and the Bersa is a PP patterned handgun that tends to "jab" at the web of the hand, making shooting it (practicing) annoying.

a major commitment is program compliance. as in, sticking to the program of obtaining, maintaining, and using a firearm regularly. if you can't commit to that or find that lugging what is effectively a 2lb brick that has a possible murder/wrongful death attached to it isn't something that you can commit to, then don't carry a handgun. i might even recommend you don't buy one if you are unwilling to entertain the thought of possibly being imprisoned for using it. it is a last resort to use in order to save your life from death or great bodily harm.

it is not a magic death laser. it will require maintenance. it will take money and time to get proficient with it. you will have people hate you for it. you will find it annoying to worry about when you don't have it with you. if you do have it with you, it is a liability if you are not ready to use it on short notice. it is worthless in a purse. it is worthless sitting in your closet gathering dust. it can be used against you if you're not commanding enough to exert an affirmative defense from an attack. it isn't a talisman that you can expect to scare people with by its mere presentation.

it is worthless if you are at any point unwilling to kill someone.

@Club Sandwich brilliant, thank you. that's an excellent write-up of the shit i need to think very hard about. if it's the route i'm going to take then i need to make sure i do it right. i had a moment when he first let me go to rip the cat off his neck when i realized that it was him or me. this wasn't going to be a conversation. i made the call to try and defend myself and animals - and i wasn't prepared for it, nor trained.

but when it came down to it, my reaction was fight, not flight. if he'd hurt or killed my cat i honestly don't know what would have happened. i'd probably be dead, honestly, because when he ran after seeing my blood i didn't run after him. if the pets were hurt, i wouldn't have just let him run away. it's strange to think about because rationally i'm like "wow, this makes me an idiot" but irrationally? i took on the care of the cats, and if one of them is going to protect me, i sure as shit am going to protect them.

this is a lot to think about. but this is my fucking home and i want to be able to maintain it.

most any store will let you handle a handgun to get a feel for it. make sure you can reach all the controls, that nothing about it is mysterious or overly complicated, that it fits your hand and your budget, and that you feel comfortable dry firing it (aiming in a safe direction, pulling the trigger to drop the hammer on an empty chamber).

many ranges offer rentals and you can usually ask at either location for assistance or perhaps a local shooting club to introduce you on a more personal level.

never buy a gun (unless you are familiar with guns in general) that you can't put your hands on or that you cannot shoot or feel comfortable with taking it apart for maintenance (field stripping). once again, a gun is worthless without practice practice practice and the commitment to use it.

one handy exercise i taught for years when i trained police officers was the "grapple test". get a paint pen or fat marker or something and a disposable t shirt or sweater. have your "attacker" wear the sweater and you have the marker held in your hand at your side touching your hip. the attacker then attempts to grapple you and pin you to the ground (touch both shoulders to the ground for 10 seconds) within 1 minute of time. your only task is to use the marker to put a mark on the sweater in any location that covers the heart, lungs, and spine (and if it's washable and you have eye/mouth/throat protection of some kind include the head and neck). that is a "stopping" gun shot wound. now realize that you usually need 2-3 such wounds for the average "stop" of an attacker.

expect to spend between $300 and $1000 for a gun and accessories if you have nothing to begin with. your local laws may restrict what you can buy, how you can buy it, the manner you store it in, the hoops to buy it, where you can carry it or keep it, transport it, shoot it, or what sort of methods/locations you can practice with it at.

your local laws may also constrain self defense circumstances, imposing a duty to retreat (you are obligated to flee an attacker if reasonable), limiting the manner of your defense (excessive force), or what you use to defend yourself with (juries and media tend to vilify some features like "magnum" cartridges, lightened triggers, or other common things).

consult your local lawyer for direct advice that applies to you. it's usually worth it if you have any doubts. most states and counties and cities have these things posted somewhere as well.

i should also mention that you can be denied a firearms purchase at the federal level (i'm assuming you're in the US for pretty much everything i'm saying) or at the state level. you can be a "prohibited person" for a variety of reasons including marijuana use, domestic violence convictions, late child support, any felony (1 year or more of prison) of any kind, et c.

you must also be 21 years or older to purchase a handgun from a dealer or purchase handgun ammunition. you will need identification, you will fill out a form 4473 in addition to any further paperwork your state requires (California has several additions for handguns for example, whereas Arizona does not), and you may have some sort of mandatory test to pass, or be forced to purchase a lock/safe/container, or signed an affidavit (sworn statement) saying as much.

hmm, i'd never considered it, but there's the very real possibility of some trauma coming out of this. in fact i'll be surprised if there isn't, i'm just still luckily hanging out on the "in shock" side of the emotional equation. i give it a few more days before it all really comes together. so far i've just avoided nightmares by sleeping in 2-3 hour chunks throughout the day and being high as balls.

is it possible that a ptsd diagnosis that might result from an assault along these lines could interfere with the legality of purchasing a firearm to... help.... defend against this kind of assault?

it seems fuck-stupid, but it wouldn't be the most fuck-stupid thing i've heard of. i should probably do my own legal hunting but i figure it's worth asking, appreciate the effort you're putting into these responses.

Word of advice, seeing as how you are
A) a female (female)
And
B) dont have any training with knives
Get yourself a karambit, those things are almost impossible to remove from your hand withough breaking your fist

not federally unless you are adjudicated as mentally unfit, subject to conservatorship (some VA hospitals do this to veterans diagnosed with PTSD that is severe enough to impact daily functioning), however, other details that are unique to your local state/county/city may impact your ability to purchase a firearm.

a woman can be denied the purchase of a firearm if they have a domestic violence conviction (even not a felony) if child protective services have entered one on behalf of the child. in California, you can be denied a gun purchase if a neighbor or coworker say they feel unsafe with you having a gun. in NYC you can be denied a pistol permit if you have no "reasonable requirement" or "clear and consistent threat" to deal with - they'll tell you to wait for the police. it really does vary.

btw if gun control advocates have their way, it'll be further restricted than it is now. some want to ban all handguns entirely, some want to force you to carry expensive liability insurance, or have the pistol locked and secured unloaded at all times... which defeats the point of a defensive firearm.

a karambit, much like brass knuckles, is a very fast way to get your fingers broken if you don't know how to fight with one. having been in knife fights and trained how to use a bayonet to some effectiveness, it's not a question of not getting stabbed, it's getting stabbed less often enough to get medical help after the fight. knife fighting also relies much more on upper body physical strength (core, pecs, hand/forearm) and requires precise control to be effectively lethal - something that trained professionals have 50/50 odds on surviving a surprise attack. also stabbing is a much simpler motion than slicing, and a karambit is absolute shit at stabbing outside of wide plunging arcs... which tends to not be allowed easily in grappling fights.

edit: while it was on my mind i want to make special mention that some housing arrangements and schools have particular rules regarding tenants or students and firearms or weapons of any kind, including behavior on and off campus. just be aware of that and plan accordingly.

yep. gave the best description i could. memory isn't the best thanks to the nerves of the evening and the injuries, but i have a pretty good mental image and i'm doing some sketchwork of my own. gonna be looking through records, i would be surprised if this dude doesn't have a previous.

normally that kind of thing would be a huge boon, but i live in a city with a high population density over a very small total landmass. the distance between neighborhoods is a matter of blocks, and my neighborhood happens to be one with a lot of very good bars/nightlife as well, so it's common for people to wander through it. piece of shit probably figured he could get away with it, since he was in a sketchier part of town.

joke's on him though because now he's hopefully got some majorly infected cat scratches, and if he comes back, he's gonna get jumped by either a bunch of angry black dudes/latinos because their grandmas told them to keep an eye out for a guy matching my description. i am beloved by the grandmas of the building. protip: always befriend the grandmas.

Hey I'm sorry that happened to you and I'm glad you are relatively (flesh wound aside) okay. Do what you need to feel safe but also if you feel suddenly panicked or overwhelmed emotionally/mentally after that "haha wasn't that some wild shit" dealing with it part dies down there is 800.656.4673 - It's the RAINN hotline and they provide services for people who have survived sexual assault if you are feeling in crisis. They can give you more resources if you have ptsd problems or where to locally connect if you need referrals/support/or just someone to listen to you. If you aren't comfortable talking on the phone they have online services at online.rainn.org too.

thank you. this is one that just... i can't embellish it or make it sound any more poetic thank that, but thank you. while i think about physical defenses and that's well and great and good and all, defending my mind is going to be pretty fucking crucial and also much more difficult.

...so i appreciate you keeping an eye out for it, i really, really do.

Both your mind and physical safety and well-being are important. There are people who will help you get through this. Don't put it all on yourself to do it alone.

yeah aight, cool, but let's keep on topic: what strikes fear into the heart of a white rapist? gun's in the works.

Gun is good. Apparently, the Best Cat in the World is also in the list. It's pretty common to have a dog that would take a bullet for you, a cat not quite so often.

is it possible that a ptsd diagnosis that might result from an assault along these lines could interfere with the legality of purchasing a firearm to... help.... defend against this kind of assault?

A mere diagnosis is unlikely to result in that, but check your local laws. There are probably local gun rights groups you can contact to ask. Or even the NRA. I'm not a fan of that organization, but they do good work in that area.

Usually, you only get prohibited if you've been involuntarily committed. There's a level of due process involved, and being "mentally ill" just by itself doesn't cut it. Still, check it out to be sure.

If you're the kind of person who copes well in the heat of the moment, it often takes a while for trauma to sink in, like a depth charge. I think you've said you're preparing for that. You sound like someone strong enough to rise above this in the long run, though.

I wish you luck and I'm glad you fought off that fucking scumbag. I hope he dies horribly.

Infected wounds, even shallow ones, often scar. It's possible this piece of shit is permanently tattooed with the evidence of his crime.

If you witnessed it, I'd catalog where you saw this vermin get scratched, so that if he ends up having scars that match, you can have a record of it.

Reading your experience, I'm finding it harder and harder to understand why the Japanese used to do this to themselves so much.

my cat's actually pretty defective. i've long suspected that he's actually a dog, this is just another point of evidence supporting the theory. luckily, he's still got those absolutely wicked natural cat-weapons - a dog bite is no joke, but a serious four-paws-involved scratchdown? that shit is insidious.

which makes me smile a little.

yeah, this is gonna hit me like a sack of bricks. for now i'm gonna laugh and make bad jokes as much as i can, and just try and get through the pain. it's fucking bad. today we slathered the inside of the wound with some medical honey from the burn ward my friend is a nurse at, so we'll see how that speeds things along. sitting at a default 6, bumping to an 8 depending on how i move (example: did i do something totally outrageous, like "open the cutlery drawer"? get fucked, off to the painhole with you), it's not pretty. got some follow-ups this week to see what we can do. a lot of the pain is just the discomfort of new vasculature forming, so it's all good. kinda neat watching the hole close up and shrink.

i'll try and get an updated pic for all the nasty fucks here tomorrow.

I wish you luck and I'm glad you fought off that fucking scumbag. I hope he dies horribly.

thank you <3 honestly, thank all of you. talking about it is nice. makes me feel nice and righteous in my anger.

Reading your experience, I'm finding it harder and harder to understand why the Japanese used to do this to themselves so much.
yeah i really cannot fucking suggest this. there are so many ways to kill yourself that are less messy for everyone involved in cleanup and don't suck shit for every second of the process.

I'm not gonna lie man, the fact that there's a bunch of latinos and black guys prowling the streets for the cunt that attacked you because you're friends with their grandma is pretty heartwarming. youre part of a good community.

But I will also suggest you get your hands on one of those self defense keychain weapons like these

IMG_1966.JPG
IMG_1967.JPG

Theyre not exactly what I'd call convenient to carry around, but they hurt like a motherfucker. One good pop on the head from one of these should probably fend off any attackers on the street long enough for you to get away, or maybe even render them unconscious. The only real downside being that you'd have to walk around with something that looks like a sex toy on your keys. I'd also suggest having a buddy take you home when you're out on a late night. But I hope you have a speedy recovery and give your spartan cat a pat on the head for me
