I feel it's important to remind everyone here (as Null has on many occasions) that all corporations -- without exception -- are spineless and cannot be trusted to deliver what they've promised under any circumstances. You must operate in all things and all ways with the understanding that the entities you do business with will screw you (intentionally or by cowering in fear from pressure by a third party) at some point. This is the only aspect of modern business you can rely upon with absolute certainty.

What's made the Farms so resilient is Null's slow, methodical work putting together as much self-managed infrastructure as he can, from getting an ASN for his own IP block to owning his own servers, building his own Cloudflare-like DDoS protection technology, and quietly cultivating relationships with multiple hosting providers. And we're all watching in real time how its enemies are also working methodically to sabotage vital internet apparatus to work around all that redundancy and self-sufficiency.

It's easy to handwave Null's predictions and statements as hyperbole sometimes because he often speaks about seemingly impossible things, like "the destruction of the internet as we know it," but we are watching it happen right now. The internet's infrastructure really is on fire and trannies like Long-Gone Dong are walking around with flame throwers to help it along.

There are only three options left to us to deal with it. 1) Let it burn and give it up. 2) Fight the fires and shore up vulnerable infrastructure to make it more resistant to these soft attacks. 3) Build a new network (like the internet, but "better").

(1) sucks for obvious reasons. (2) is potentially feasible, but has to be done with the understanding that it will meet heavy resistance and isn't even 100% attainable. It will also involve dirty pool -- start aiming this kind of soft attack at bigger names and get big companies temporarily yoinked offline and we'll start seeing change, and if the censorship ringleaders themselves get hit with these tactics themselves, they'll lead the charge to convince companies to provide services without bothering with politics. It can't be a clean fight; the enemy is already fighting dirty.

(3) is a fun project I think people should work on no matter what, but it may soon be the last remaining option. The goals are lofty -- media-agnostic (i.e. wireless, copper, fiber, etc. links are first-class citizens), full end-to-end encryption for absolutely everything (i.e. "in-the-clear" comms should not be permitted or even possible), scalable mesh networking, full anonymity while also facilitating authentication and identification when desired, censorship immunity, full decentralization, DDoS resistance, zero-trust design, no dependence upon (or use of) existing internet infrastructure and so on (reminder that you don't actually need TCP/IP to move data around a global network).

It won't be fast and it will have low adoption (at least at first), but it may be the only way forward to have a healthy internet again. An attacker can't cut a cord that he can't find (or that doesn't even exist). They can't kill a node that they can't find. They can't clog a whole network by flooding it with traffic if it can detect and ignore it and there's a hundred different routes to and around it. They can't use regular "internet-style attacks" against a network that doesn't behave like the current internet, especially if it's self-healing to the point that it cuts off or ignores misbehaving nodes or networks.

There are people already working on this (I'm one of them); it's not a new idea. It's also not coming from (or being driven by) academia, so there's hope that it won't be touched by the pod people until it begins gaining a foothold, by which time it will (hopefully) be too late for bad actors to kill it in the crib. The kind of people working on this are disillusioned with the internet and what it's become, have long seen the dangers of its design and have been quietly working on bits and pieces of "something better" for a long time. They're being vindicated right now by all the censorship happening across the board and it's very good motivation to carry on.

Don't give up hope, lads. It ain't over by a long shot.
