So I got a dilemma...I accidentally ran over my webcam's USB end. Now while that can be repaired, sort of, it made me realize what a piece of shit my camera was.

I sold my Logitech webcam in 2020 to my sister (I think I let her borrow it because I fell for the "two weeks" meme) which I bought in the late 2010s when my sister needed it during COVID (and webcams were hard to find) and then my parents bought me some chink webcam that I don't even know what brand it's supposed to be. It's allegedly 1080p but quality is so ass it wouldn't make a difference anyway.

With technology improved (in theory) and wanting to replace my shitcam with something like I used to have, what are your suggestions for webcams that are actually somewhat decent?

Come on, this is the only true choice. Native support on Linux and you can easily find these for 5$. It can record to wild framerates, and the image quality is great*!

*: when you have light in your room, otherwise you get piss filter.

Logitech C920x

I had one recently it was great until it wasn't but I think mine had a manufacturing defect where the quality started to dip after 5 or 10 minutes of use.

I really liked it sat on my monitor wasn't ugly or flashy just sat there unobtrusively. The quality was great when it worked mine just got hot after 5 minutes of use an then the quality started dipping to the point it was essentially a potato but if I unplugged it an let it cool down it went back to working but it got to be a hassle so returned it.

Other than a keyboard I had nearly 20 years ago logitiec have always been great for peripherals so I'm kinda sure it's a one off and the returns process was yea put it in the box an slap a label on it an drop it at the post office and we will refund you once it's marked as being dropped off, the customer service was excellent.

Webcams as a whole will always be limited by the fact that their sensor is small, the light gathering potential of its surface area is therefore limited, and software can only denoise so much, no matter advances in other hardware areas. This physical limitation, the amount of light in your room on you, is the primary difference between crisp image and garbage image, it is 90% of what matters, be it on 480p, 1080p or 4k - so if your webcam quality appeared to be rather shit, I would suggest buying any webcam that isn't ultrawide in the 30-60$ and instead taking 20 bucks for any of the many unobtrusive led panels that are often sold as "video lights" (or even a small ringlight if you don't mind the direct shine). Having light on you from a 20$ light panel will make more of a difference than 200$ spent on the webcam itself

This assumes you are on a static desktop ofc.

The Logitech C920x seems like a solid choice, but I have not tried it. Logitech is a pretty solid brand. It's got good reviews.
I have the OG C920 and have never had an issue with it. Used to use it a lot more than I do now, but it'll record when I need it to and it looks breddy gud for only being $60 or $70 or whatever I paid for it back in the day.

The C920x appears to be either 30fps for both 1080p and 720p for $60, or one that records 60fps in 720p. If that's important.

Honestly I'd just get the cheapest Logitech you can that will suit your needs.

It's also extremely durable, Chris' PSEye survived many beatings (mostly).

Buy one with an absolutely dogshit microphone. C920 is the best for that, and it records pretty well so it's a two-for-one deal
