Law "Identity fraud": Proposed Texas state law would make identifying as transgender a felony

The Texas state legislature may soon consider whether transgender Texans can be charged with a felony for identifying as their preferred gender.

A bill proposed by Houston-area Rep. Tom Oliverson asks to amend the state penal code to create a new crime of "gender identity fraud." Under the act, a person could be charged with a felony for "identifying the person's biological sex as the opposite of the biological sex assigned to the person at birth" while dealing with either government entities or employers. The charge carries a punishment of up to two years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Oliverson's name is regularly affixed to some of the most hateful legislation coming out of the Lone Star State. He authored the state House's version of a bill to ban gender-affirming care for minors in the state. That bill was signed into law in the summer of 2023 and took effect later that year. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has since sued several doctors for allegedly providing care to transgender youth.

While the bill doesn't have a co-sponsor or any planned hearings in the legislature as of this writing, it's one small piece of continued attacks on trans people in red states and nationally.

Late last year, the Texas Department of Public Safety announced that it would not change sex markers on state-issued driver's licenses for any reason other than "clerical errors." Upon taking office, President Donald Trump floated a raft of anti-trans executive orders that barred transgender people from the United States military and ordered the federal government to cease recognition of transgender and nonbinary identities.

That's not to say that conservatives are racking up easy wins. Trump's decrees have been countered with a barrage of lawsuits and judge's orders, and the removal of references to transgender people on Stonewall National Monument's webpage led to protests outside of the storied LGBTQ+ landmark.

Lol highly doubt these types would happy with someone going "teehee I'm a boy" while presenting full femme
Of course not. But this is the law they're confident they can pass.
They're making it a felony to claim you are the opposite sex from that which you were born to the government or your employer, specifically in speech or writing. The bill makes no statement in regards to how you are allowed to "present."

Don't get me wrong, definitely fuck troons, but I think going full-on straight to make it a felony for having the identification would just backfire and create more troon support in the long run. They're giving the "twansgender are bweing genocided!!!1!11" crowd ammo. Perception matters to defeat this ideological garbage. Making it look like an obvious culture war reaction will just polarize those that aren't already drinking the kool-aid against them. You become like the abortion issue, yeah, 30% of the country is totally all in on banning it, but you'll be basically locked to those 30 and won't get enough votes from the less rabid to actually get it done.

I'd personally just let the troons implode themselves by letting them be cancerous LARP babies and then just point out what that coddling leads to. Convince people that supporting gender ideology leads to people being turned into mental nightmares (showing off a good selection of examples), and use that grounding along with the "no men in women's sports" common sense belief to sway the less politically inclined and kill this monster off. But Republicans are just as reactionary if not more than Democrats these days, so of course, we get posturing and divisive moves instead. I hate political leaders almost as much as I hate troons, and my god, do I hate troons. One of these days a smart person will help on this crusade, surely...

Trump ruined a grift I had planned. My driver's license is due for renewal this year, and I was going to change my gender to female. Not because I identify as one, but because any mistake I made I could scream transphobia.

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Considering any hiring manager of any worth would instantly sniff out a tranny and not hire them regardless, the difference is irrelevant.

Not really, then we go into LGBT anti discrimination -

oh hell this is Texas everyone's a faggot but only bottoms are discriminated against anyway

“Sex is different to gender!” They yelled
And now the distinction has been made official they’re mad.
Also lol at “being trans is a felon” no, having official identity documents be false is the crime here. A few rarely seen documents shouldn’t stop your trans joy lmao
Now we just need to enforce voter ID, and force them to say their full legal name to vote.

I've always thought it was insane that these people can get their birth certificates amended to say the opposite sex than what they were born as.

That's just straight up lying.
