Well yeah, that's kind of the point of a fantasy setting.Consider that Lord of the Rings takes place in the hollow earth. Sometimes a fantasy setting will go against the grain of what's possible in reality.
That said though, the question was "why does magic preclude the existence of science?" If someone wanted to, they could probably still fly a kite in a thunderstorm and make a battery somehow, I would imagine.
