The only Sonic game I ever had in my youth was a pirated PC port of Sonic 3 & Knuckles and that is all you need.

If the game is on the Genesis, Adventure 1 or 2, Colors, Generations, or Mania, I'd buy it for him. Anything else, I'd rent.

I would, however, let him listen to the music from any game. Every game has a good soundtrack, and that includes the bad ones.
(Except Sonic Chronicles and that one song from Sonic Spinball. Chronicles sucked because Bioware was rushed and had to use an incompetent sound team; Spinball just hurts.)
