I'm sure that's wrong but cannot dispute

A thread for when you're pretty sure someone is full of shit, but you don't have the relevant knowledge to argue

For example, today I had to call someone and ask them to email the office I was at. They sent the email right away, but I didn't hear back fir half an hour from the recipient. I figured he was doing other things, but when he came back he felt compelled to tell me

"Our email is very slow, because we have triple firewalls."

That's nonsense, right? I don't think he knows anything more about computers than me.

What experiences have other kiwis had with "I know you're stupid but I'm not smart enough to prove it?"

It depends. It's possibly when using spamassassin filters with reversed polarity (hence the triple firewall). It's a bit of an unorthodox setup, but you know how many businesses skimp on good tech solutions.

Had a friend go "Antifa is not as big as a problem as the alt-right, since the alt-right is organized internationally over the internet and Antifa isn't."
That's just bullshit. Within that conversation, he also said that violence is an inherent trait of the Alt-Right, whereas Antifa is nonviolent, there's only people that are violent that happen to be in Antifa, but the movement itself is harmless.

I can't prove this wrong for a lack of arguments, it's just impossible to prove someone wrong when they are this heavily influenced by whatever strange ideology they subscribe to. I chose to leave it at that. Dude's an okay lad, but on the topic of politics, I decided to avoid further such topics.

If you're reversing the polarity of the filters and it runs slow you can just remodulate the firewall shield harmonics to emit a tachyonarino field so the packets take zero time, at least when viewed by an outside observer, to traverse the VPN tunnel. You'll lose causality so some stuff may appear to happen before its cause when viewed from outside but who cares about that? Inside the bubble everything will appear causal to the casual observer.

Space inside the bubble won't be technically Euclidean but people come here to work, not check that the angles of all triangles add to exactly 180 degrees.

I think OP's full of shit because even the tech-exceptional would know triple firewalls slow down networks.
What mechanism slows them down, though? I mean, I could see issues with things simply not making it through at all due to firewall settings, but either the permissions are going to be sufficient to get past the firewall or they're not, right? I'm not IT savvy, really, but when I see "slows down" I think either "increased processing load" or "the network has to resend things so many times due to firewalls punting things into oblivion that it becomes noticeable".

I think it's because the firewalls increase drag, and the email has to be cooled off each time it survives the fire.

Any traffic through a firewall will experience a delay as the traffic is processed according to the rules, the delay time is relative to the number of rules that are checked and the speed and capacity of the firewall, as well as network load. This delay ranges from unnoticeable to a few seconds unless someone fucks up particularly bad. This doesn't account for half an hour.

They could be using greylisting in their email service.

I'm pretty sure he was just doing other shit. By which I mean masturbating.
