Holy shit.
Reminds me of the episode of X-Files, "Home". I feel for Ray, though. Dude only speaks dog, but he's got a kind face.
i feel bad for all of em, because they do actually seem like nice kind people, unlike a lot of hillbillies, what surprised me is the other guy who was real quiet, he is nonverbal, he never spoke, he supposedly answered a question in school once orally with a quiet '' yeeahh' but thats it, hes never really spoken , but he did graduate high school, thats not saying a lot b because people who are mildly retarded can often graduate if there is no other additional learning issues other than being slow, but that other dude cant even speak, and poor ray, he never went to school, most of them never did... ray just barks but hes clearly a nice, friendly outgoing, and kind person, i do wish someone could come in and do bi-monthly check ups on them, as well as train them how to bathe, use the toilet, clean house, clean clothes properly, they live in squalor, ray shits his pants because hes was never taught ! none of them had ever been taught how to function ! and their idiot neighbors who frequently threaten, and actually enable the isolation and lack of learning / exposure is not, and obviously has not done the Whitakers any favors . there is no excuse why they do not have regular help, they all need daily living school training and occupational therapy. they are actually friendly people who i think would be open to it if people like this guy who meets up with them could help facilitate and arrange it
This entire thing feels extremely fake. The person in the middle looks like they were designed and costumed by someone whose closest brush with reality is watching cartoons. They look like what a coastal elite thinks everyone who doesn't live in Manhattan looks like.
There's also the fact that someone in the comments claims to have dug into the family and find out that they're not brother and sister -in fact, nobody in the family tree is - and the "documentarian" didn't even spell the name right. It's Whittaker, with two Ts.
unfortunately its not fake the whole family is mentally retarded, among other things. they have been highly inbred over like 5 generations, but unlike their neighbors, they are actually friendly kind people, and being isolated and kept away has just caused them to never learn any basic self care and home making skills, even folks with significant mental retardation / developmental disabilities can be taught with enough persistence and consistency.
I get this is a shitpost but still, inbreeding is it's at its worst in the more remote areas, and most of Alabama is relatively developed. Georgia and Tennessee are as well, for that matter. In deep Appalachia, many areas are exclusively white or otherwise racially homogeneous with very few people and (prior to the fairly recent improved infrastructure) very little contact with the outside world due to both geographic and economic reasons. It's also a lot of old blood there, families who have been in the area since they stepped off the boat in the 1700s. Your family trees are going to start looking pretty tangled at some point with such isolation and a low population.
I'm not denying there's inbred hicks in Alabama, because there absolutely are -- it's just that Appalachia (and maybe the swamps down in the delta while we're at it) are more deserving of the inbreeding title.
Sperging aside, cases like this are both extremely sad and deeply unsettling. You can't blame the people who were born from an incestuous pairing because they're not the ones at fault, but with this level of disability, both physically and mentally, there's just no integrating into normal society even if they can take care of themselves in a basic sense. It is nice seeing these people shown more as human beings rather than zoo animals for once, though. A lot of media about incest cases are incredibly dehumanizing.
there is actually quite a lot of inbred and isolated people in Tennessee, especially in the eastern and north eastern parts, its disgusting and sad.
