UN India shut off the internet in an attempt to maintain order

Last week, local governments in the northern Indian states of Punjab and Haryana shut down citizens' internet access and text messaging services just before a verdict was to be released on a high-profile rape case. The case involved a cult leader with a large following who was accused of raping two women in his group. A statement from the Additional Chief Secretary of Haryana said the order was "issued to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order" in the region. Around 50 million people lost internet access for five days.

India has a history of censoring web content in the name of social order. Some areas of the country have made liking blasphemous social media posts punishable with jail time, it has blocked sex sites and has arrested WhatsApp group members who have posted altered, unflattering photos of the prime minister, which is against the country's law prohibiting fake news.

If the order to temporarily shut off the region's internet had any effect, it wasn't to prevent a disturbance of the peace. After the cult leader was found guilty, his followers violently protested the verdict, resulting in 38 deaths. Trains were also stopped from traveling to and from the states, schools and businesses were closed and security officers were sent to regain order. Internet and messaging services were restored this morning.

He's going away for a LOOOONG time. The Indian government is trying to crack down hard on cults and stuff like child marriage, and modernize the country culturally and economically, without going full Mao. Part of the reason they shut down the internet and the trains was due to a bomb threat (on the trains) and the internet to try and prevent possible Aum Shinrykio (sic) style attacks from cultists across the country

Cults really are a danger to any society and if they lock that cocksucker up forever, that will be a good thing.

India being what it is, I won't be amazed if his batshit crazy cultists stage a jail raid to free him. They should probably just arrange for him to be raped and murdered in prison if they want this whole locking him up thing to last.

They try that and India will just shoot the cult leader and sic their counter terror units on the cult. They are not fucking playing around with this right now if what they did just for his trial says anything.

Besides, a cult that castrates its disciples as a rite to get closer to God is better for an overpopulated country than a religion that worships rats and eight-armed men.

And this is explicitly why the Indian govt cares. The places has been a shithole that regularly gangrapes stray vaginas to death while praying at cattle for centuries. But its getting to the point of Thuggee type disruption and rivalry to govt control.

They don't care about feminism, rights, or equality, but they do care about keeping things functional, and even by the low standards of India, this shit is getting too stupid. They know where it leads and, shockingly enough, India can learn and apply lessons when given the opportunity. They see the nonsense that is happening in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Mexico.

You cant let someone defy the law like this and enforce any declared right of plunder of a local area. That's a step away from allowing to collect taxes and prevent you from doing so. The Indian govt will escalate this until they win or collapse.

They cant make a fucking rifle, but they understand managing people.

I feel kind of bad for India.

It took centuries for the UK to transfer from monarchy to a republic, and they still have the House of Lords hanging around.

America got lucky, but it still has had troubles in it's democracy since its inception.

And these places weren't countries with literally a billion people who still shit in the street.

Democracy is hard. Modernization and Democracy is harder.
