According to a Reddit, the street shitter running Microsoft has mandated that 'Windows Defender' 'antivirus' will remove the 'DeCSS' software that was developed to remove 'CSS' shyster 'digital rights management' from DVD movies several decades ago.

This includes not just an old compiled executable, which under some coincidence could conceivably have been included in some malware (harvesting random DVDs????????), but also the source of the program, whether uncompressed or in the original ZIP archive.

Discuss.

does this go on to affect other shit like DVD Decrypter?
who the fuck has even thought about the existence of DeCSS in fifteen years?

this is still confusing for me
I could understand THEM! finding a flimsy reason to stop DeCSS when the big shitstorm around DeCSS was a thing, back in the Bush 2 administration
If there was really some big death thing buried in DeCSS for real why the fuck now rather than when it was decades ago and people gave a fuck about DeCSS?
Is there some aspect of DeCSS that could be applied to various other things?

I’m confused as to what this means. Are DVD files being deleted, are DVDs no longer able to be played, or is an old anti-DRM program being deleted?
Forgive the ignorance.

An old anti-DRM program, that was also the subject of an infamous free speech case.

There's apparently some further feature creep where they are dipping their toes into blocking some keygens and cracks. On the flipside of that I've had Windows Defender block a couple of things from the demoscene, maybe because Fairlight's packer is similar to Farilight the piracy groups packer. This is not tin-foil hat spergery but they're already rifling through peoples OneDrives and it seems like the would one day want to extend that to the desktop or at the bare minimum the future virtual desktop. Then the desktop, for feature parity!

If Windows Defender has gone rogue, is there any workaround at all or do you just have to quarantine Windows machines and only give them read-only access to any network resources?

I hate this “your computer doesn’t belong to you” future we’re headed towards, but the only hope we have is there will one day be countermeasures to M$’s bullshit.
It really is just the first hurdle you have to go over, so any pirate or hacker will always find a way to counter Windows Defender (more like jailer tbh) eventually,

People actually use Windows Defender?

It gets ever worse for Windows 11. Unless you install Windows 11 Pro, you absolutely must have a Microsoft Account in order to login to your Windows 11 Home edition for the first time. Absolutely no exceptions.
