I would consider writing a letter to someone (with a low-level offend like theft) if it was completely anonymous. My fear would be that after getting out of prison they might search for me and get me in grave danger.

That's why you write to the lifers.

I knew someone that used a PO Box and several aliases for a few different penpals, but a PO box can be expensive just for writing to inmates.

I found your post looking for information about my pen pal Jimmy Clark, he is that guy with the cute smile you talked about in your first examples, a person proud of his inheritance and his roots, I think your post comes as tendentious. Has anyone bothered to write them? Asked them what they do there? How they feel? No. Nobody really cares because we're more occupied in sensationalism and the morbitidy of their actions. I don't justify them, I am no one to justify or judge, but I think that by writing the way you do, you incite people who don't know or haven't met a penpal in prision to judge them in a pretty hard way. I have never been a politically correct person, It just seemed like the right thing to show you the other side of the coin you're laughing about. I have been writing to Jimmy for several months. He is a person who listens and speaks very sincerely. A person who dances and sings to be heard by the God he believes in, He will come out in a couple of years having served his time for poor choices and when he does I know he will be a person that will look again for a place in society, a right way to live and enjoy what he's learned. I know they're not all like that. I've written to some convicts before, as in free life. There's a little bit of everything in jail and I trust Jimmy will be one of those people that the american prision system actually managed to reform. I know because I stopped to listen what he had to say. Jimmy knows my address, we have a good relationship and I will go to visit him to the Pow Wow (A native american celebrarion) when the time is right. That was it.
