I think in terms of the uncanny, beetles are by far the least squicky of the insect kingdom.

I keep ants and they're extremely low-maintenance. You only need to feed them, provide water, change the nest every few months and clean the arena.

i am currenbtly under war with the bugs in my household, recently the fuckers have taken over my garage and are sending their bigger artillery int he forms of tarantulas and ginats wasps

i will exterminate them all with my recently domesticated lizard troops

He used to be really good but he's become children's entertainment. Most of his channel now is about bug fights.

Yeah, going through his channel now I realize most of my favorite videos of him are from 7 years ago or so, I loved watching him build impressive vivariums.. that's disappointing that he does so much bug fight content now, I don't really enjoy seeing animals pitted against each other in manmade environments. Are there any other channels that you could recommend?

There was ants Australia, but he hasn't posted in three years. I don't really follow any big ant youtubers anymore, but in general anyone who has a macro camera, doesn't dramatize, doesn't mix species for cheap fights and doesn't raise invasive species is ok.

Oh yeah, again about antscanada: many of his largest colonies were of invasive ants (yellow crazies, solenopsis geminata, I think he even kept pharaoh ants at one point)

Their larva can be pretty nasty, the the adults seem cool its when they open their wings I'd freak out.

I've heard they're good. I've always had the fear though, what if the tank gets smashed? That's always kinda dissuaded me from keeping cool insects

Nah that won't happen unless you push it off a shelf. You should make sure the nest material is strong enough so that the ants won't tunnel it.

You know, I'd like Dragonflies even more if they didn't fly so clumsily. Everytime i see one it's like they're drunk and might hit something with their head.

They sound so badass and yet I never see them do anything of note.

It's a shame mosquitos ruin things for that whole group, non biting midges (Chironomidae) are quite populous and you're likely to see these more especially around lamps in the summer.

Despite what it looks like, they lack the biology to harm you. I think you can recognize them versus mosquitos by their very fuzzy antennae(?) but I'm not quite sure that's a constant.
