Varoufakis, the former prime minister of Greece (or whatever the head of state is called in Greece... possibly Gyrosmaster idk) said that Biden's election will lead to a big turn in political tone towards the
right. The reasoning, in short, is that the economic, social and political situation is so messed up that it'll blow up in the face of whoever is sitting in the white house and it will naturally cause people to become more nationalistic and xenophobic. So come next election (or the election thereafter) the USA will start to drift further and further into far-right territory. He compared it to the interrim phase between the two world wars and said that the global economic crisis in 2008 and the prolonged death-rattle of the system that we feel until today is essentially the old system dying and a new system failing to take its place and this is where (I assume) alt-right neonazis swoop in and turn 'murrica into a fascist hellhole, much like what happened in Germany in the 20s and 30s.
Kinda interesting to see these different views, some people think Biden will actively or passively turn the USA into commieland with roving antifa Gestapo (either being endorsed or connived) and some others expect the rise of neofacism...
@Senior Lexmechanic has summed it up nicely I think. The gap between the US and the rest of the world is growing smaller, the US is no longer able to use the boogeyman of communism to scare nations back in line and some slowly overcome the long history of getting their shit fucked in the 20th century. Doesn't help that China is becoming stronger, that the US is not in a political position to just bomb them or out-produce them and that massive trade zones are being created all over the globe that challenge the US and their trade domination of the past. Just a month ago, a third of earth's population was united under the largest trade deal ever made.
On the otherh and, USA trying to cling to nationalistic ideals in a world that has been globalized for fucking millenia is almost as assbackwards as someone's idea of combating all that by infighting over some -let's be honest- insanely benign politics crap concerning minor aspects of social life.
On a sidenote, this is why it's so weird to me that the US is making such a fuss over NATO-members spending 2% of GDP for their defense. For one thing, most people don't realize that NATO members don't have to pay jack fucking shit until the year 2024 (and even then it's just more of a guideline than a fixed deal afaik) and on the other, this makes the US and their hegemonial status amongst the NATO members obsolete even quicker, if those members no longer have to bank on protection by the USA. After all, if I have an army of my own and a couple of close trade partners who might be able to support me with their nukes, why should I give much of a shit about the USA whining over trade imbalance?
