There have been feds all over lefty activist groups forever with a small gap around 9-11 when all resources went into making sure no student visa holders were learning to fly 757's in their spare time. It's not as widely known because most of the groups weren't up to shit except legitimate first amendment protected activities. Most people never hear about the feds being on top of a group unless it ends in a flashy domestic terrorism arrest.
