It's nowhere near October, but one ensemble is already on track to be named the most controversial Halloween costume of 2015.

Social media users were out in full force on Monday criticizing several Halloween retailers for offering a Caitlyn Jenner costume reminiscent of the former-athlete's Vanity Fair cover earlier this year.

While Jenner's supporters condemned the costume as "transphobic" and "disgusting" on Twitter, Spirit Halloween, a retailer that carries the costume, defended the getup.

"At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes," said Lisa Barr, senior director of marking at Spirit Halloween. "We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that."

If Japan has taught us anything, it's that they can make a mascot character for literally anything, and now Mako Shimano - the official mascot character for a Toyota car dealership in Gunma Prefecture - is turning heads online along with her robotic centaur chasis, GUMBA. GUMBA stands for "Gallop-Unit-Mobility Based on Automobile".

According to the official back-story for the character, Gunma Prefecture is designated as a special zone where people can get licenses that allow them to operate robotic prostheses shaped like the body of a horse. The GUMBA units allow people to easily explore the countryside of Gunma Prefecture, regardless of age or physical ability, because they are operated by the user's brainwaves.

Mako Shimano pilots a GUMBA because her mother did the same thing. Mako attends a high school that allows GUMBA pilots to get their licenses early, and she joins a sports team that plans to aim for the championship in the G-Rally, a GUMBA-themed sporting event.

The team responsible for the creation of Mako Shimano and GUMBA includes:

  • Original, original work: Yuu Matsui
  • Character design, original art: Urimo
  • Mechanical design: Kyouryuu Kuramochi
  • Art design: Nanana Vision
If you're wondering what robotic horse units have to do with Gunma Prefecture, it's a Japanese pun: the "-ma" in "Gunma" is written with the Kanji for "horse".

I was expecting a giant mechanized statue gimmick, a megabot or at least something along the lines of a bastardized boston dynamics dog.

Instead they continue supplying fresh new fetishes for the incel horde.

Does this mean we can't make fun of India any more?

A Seattle, Wash., councilman implied that a new effort to clean excrement off the side walk outside the local courthouse could be racist Tuesday.

The crime and smell of urine and excrement have gotten so bad outside a King County courthouse that two judges are scrambling to find ways to fix the situation, reports the Seattle Times.

King County councilmember Larry Gossett isn’t a fan of one solution to power wash the feces from the sidewalks to tamp down on the smell. Power washing the sidewalks is too reminiscent of civil rights activists being hosed down, he said.

The area around the courthouse is surrounded by a homeless shelter and other social service organizations. Multiple assaults, harassment and drugs have been reported to the police in the area near the courthouse. Jurors have taken to asking judges to release them from jury duty and two jurors have been assaulted over the past two months.

“When they come to this courthouse they’re afraid to come in,” said King County Sheriff John Urquhart. “They’re afraid to walk down Third Avenue because what they see.”

Urquhart is asking for an $8,000 increase in budget from the King County Council to have deputies patrol the street. “There is public urination, defecation. That’s a crime,” Urquhart said. “There is smoking marijuana in public.”

I hope this commie's house burns down because firemen didn't want to offend anyone by using fire hoses to put it out.

Judge denies legal request to grant elephants personhood

By Associated Press December 28 at 1:14 PM

HARTFORD, Conn. — A Connecticut judge this week denied a petition by an animal rights group to grant personhood to three elephants in a traveling petting zoo, calling the request “wholly frivolous.”

The Nonhuman Rights Project sued in November on behalf of elephants at Commerford Zoo, based in Goshen. The group wanted the elephants released to a natural habitat sanctuary.

Elephants “have a sense of self, remember the past and plan for the future, engage in complex communication, show empathy, and mourn their dead,” the Florida-based group said in its complaint.

In addition, the group also said that “’Person’ is not a synonym for ‘human being,’ but designates an entity with the capacity for legal rights.”

Superior Court Judge James Bentivegna called the petition “wholly frivolous on its face in legal terms,” in his decision released Tuesday.

The Nonhuman Rights Project did not have a prior relationship with the elephants, and thus did not have standing to bring the petition, the judge ruled. He also found there is no precedent for providing elephants the rights of personhood.

The Nonhuman Rights Project is reviewing the decision, a spokeswoman said.

“We’re happy with the decision,” zoo co-owner Darlene Commerford said. “It was a frivolous case.”

The three female elephants, Asians Beulah, 48, Minnie, 46, and African Karen, 34, all have been with the zoo since they were 4 years old and are “like family,” Commerford said.

The elephants, like all the animals owned by the company, are properly cared for, she said.

Pachyderms are people, too.

That’s the argument being made by the Nonhuman Rights Project, which filed the first-ever animal rights lawsuit this week on behalf of captive elephants in Connecticut — claiming they are legal “persons” who deserve to be in sanctuaries, not zoos.

The nonprofit organization believes that because the creatures are autonomous beings, who live “emotionally, socially, and cognitively complex lives,” they have a fundamental right to be set free from the Commerford Zoo in Goshen.

Lawyers for the group are specifically requesting that their “elephant clients” — Beulah, Karen and Minnie — be released and sent the Performing Animal Welfare Society’s ARK 2000 natural habitat sanctuary in California, “where their right to bodily liberty will be respected.”

They announced the filing on Monday in a press release, saying they were seeking a common law writ of habeas corpus in Connecticut Superior Court.

“This is not an animal welfare case,” explained attorney Steven M. Wise, president and founder of the NhRP.

“We do not claim the Commerford Zoo is violating any animal welfare statutes,” he said. “What they are doing is depriving Beulah, Karen, and Minnie of their freedom, which we see as an inherently cruel violation of their most fundamental right as elephants. If Connecticut common law courts truly value autonomy, as previous rulings suggest they do, they too will see their situation in this light and order the elephants’ release from captivity. ”

The NhRP says it has been working with “world-renowned elephant experts” to learn more about what needs to be done to protect the rights of the animals — including Joyce Poole and Cynthia Moss, who have both submitted affidavits in support of the suit.

“Our understanding of elephants has only deepened over time: for example, we know they have a sense of self, remember the past and plan for the future, engage in complex communication, show empathy, and mourn their dead. But their legal status as ‘things’ with no rights has remained exactly the same. What’s at stake here is the freedom of beings who are no less self-aware and autonomous than we humans are,” said David Zabel, the NhRP’s local counsel in Connecticut and a partner at the law firm of Cohen & Wolf.

Steven M. Wise, president and founder of the NhRP, added, “Common law courts must catch up to what we know about members of this extraordinarily complex species and how they suffer — precisely because they are autonomous — when businesses like Commerford force them to perform at circuses and fairs and live in environments completely unsuited to their needs. The time has come for them to be.”

Words fail me.

"Rinsing dog turds off the sidewalk is the same as hosing down civil rights activists"... isn't that like him calling civil rights activists pieces of shit? And that person considers himself to be "progressive"? What in the fuck.
