It's nowhere near October, but one ensemble is already on track to be named the most controversial Halloween costume of 2015.

Social media users were out in full force on Monday criticizing several Halloween retailers for offering a Caitlyn Jenner costume reminiscent of the former-athlete's Vanity Fair cover earlier this year.

While Jenner's supporters condemned the costume as "transphobic" and "disgusting" on Twitter, Spirit Halloween, a retailer that carries the costume, defended the getup.

"At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes," said Lisa Barr, senior director of marking at Spirit Halloween. "We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that."

What a terrible injustice!! She should sue them all!

No but seriously, only in a first country is something like this considered a horrible travesty. I hope her and her "mum" get diabeetus.
With obesity rising I think this is a good thing. Does it suck that she doesn't get her free fries? Sure, but at least she won't be a fat bitch who lives off welfare and will probably die from diabetes in a year or two.

I don't know if it warrants its own thread, but this is becoming it's own "gate" of sorts but without the autistic faction-off effect others do. Apple is deleting feedback and also banning accounts that have been used to report a widespread issue in regards to the usual water damage and data recovery processes. They are flat out saying independent repair are a scam and that, in fact, data recovery is impossible. This is also denying that forensics exist for computer storage and had existed for decades. Apple is lying by omission to prevent you from being given back your personal property.

Apple doesn't like it when google is getting too much attention for being evil, so they are stepping up their game in response I see...

If this isn’t the craziest, most heartbreaking story you’ll read today, you truly have a heart of stone. After struggling with infertility, a woman who is now pregnant with quadruplets—two boys and two girls—is considering the unthinkable. She wants to abort her baby boys.

Known only on Reddit as “PlaneGanache,” the mother shared her story, filed under “Am I The A**hole?” asking if she is in the wrong for wanting to keep her daughters but kill her sons.

The irony is truly bitter that after years of fertility and the monumental cost of in vitro, this mother fails to recognize the unspeakable blessing of not only one, but four little lives now taking up residence in her womb, and, just after going through such lengths to bring them into being, she is considering terminating some of those lives to tailor-make her family.

It’s beyond sick.

“Fast forward. We find out we’re pregnant and we are super happy, like over the moon ecstatic,” she continued. “We couldn’t wait for the 12 week mark to tell people, and started working on a nursery right away.”

At a follow-up ultrasound, she and her husband learned that they were expecting identical twin girls and two fraternal boys, each one perfectly formed and healthy.

“Four. That’s insane,” she declared.

Her post continued:

Now, I’m a small woman, 5’0 and very petite. At my next scan, it was suggested I consider aborting two of the pregnancies for the sake of my body, and to be honest, I was quietly considering bringing this idea up to my husband anyway because of the money involved with raising four children. We could afford two babies, but no way could we afford four.
Me and my husband are distraught that this is our reality, but we went home and tried to figure it out. From our latest scan, we know we have identical twin girls and two fraternal boys in there. If we go through with the selective abortion, which we most likely will, I brought up that I would like to keep the two girls as they are identical twins (I’m hoping they have the ‘twin bond’) and also, to be honest, I’ve always wanted girls.
Understandably, the couple’s extended family was rightfully upset when they announced the plan, as anyone in their right mind should be upset that killing half of them is even being considered, especially on the basis of their gender!

While PlaneGanache’s story would be nearly impossible to verify, it still serves to highlight the heartbreaking reality that the vast majority of abortions are elective and for selfish reasons like family size preference. The truth that many don’t realize is, within our abortion-loving medical community, women carrying multiples are frequently encouraged to abort one or more of their babies for just about any reason the doctor can cook up.

Seeking an abortion because of your body size (seriously?), budget size, or desired family size is selfish and shortsighted, plain and simple. None of us, not this woman, nor her children, have any guarantee of comfort, happiness, or even waking up the next morning. To make an irreversible decision because of these insignificant factors is unthinkable for any mother to consider.

To end a child’s life for any reason should be anathema, but there’s something especially startling and infuriating when it’s done for pure convenience.

I'm pro abortion and babies are gross, but that seems fucked up.

A five foot woman having quadruplets could flat out fucking die and even if not is going to have shit happen to undercarriage that makes the firebombing of Dresden look like a rash. Complications could kill not only her but all the fetuses. It's pretty routine to cull in that situation.

And you need some criterion for it. It's not like she decided to have a litter.

It's not the first time. I remember reading about a woman who aborted her identical twin boys and kept the girl who was their fraternal triplet. In that case the selfish dumbass complained that she'd have to move from Manhattan to the suburbs if she had three kids, which just wasn't happening.

Zimbabwe’s judiciary splurging $155,000 on powdered wigs from the UK while many of its courtrooms are in disrepair and nearly two thirds of the population live below the poverty line has sparked outrage.

Despite casting out its British colonizers decades ago Zimbabwe has held on to the curious tradition of donning its judges in white wigs. Now legal authorities are under fire for ordering 64 handmade horse hair wigs from Stanley Ley Legal Outfitters in London at a cost of around $2,600 a pop, the Zimbabwe Independent reports.

The curious move comes as the African country grapples with fuel and medicine shortages and as the inflation rate hits its highest level since 2008.

“The conditions in Zimbabwe’s courts are dire and yet they can find money for wigs costing thousands of pounds — it’s obnoxious,” Arnold Tsunga of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) told the Times.

The controversial order has sparked a debate over whether Zimbabwean judges should ditch the wigs, which many consider a hangover from the colonial era.

“What surprises me in Zimbabwe is that we say everything against colonialism but we live more colonial than the colonizers themselves,” Harare based lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa said to the Guardian.

“A normal litigant would be intimidated to get into a courtroom full of ridiculously dressed judges. Why can we not dress decently? If we want to wear wigs, why can’t we make them in our own way? Those wigs were meant for white judges – we look ridiculous.”

For that price I was expecting something finer. They look like curly carpet remnants. Is that sisal?

https://goodschoolhunting.org/2019/04/teachers-unions-oppose-bill-make-sex-students-crime.html

Yesterday at a hearing for a bill (HB 5817) that would make sex between school employees and students a crime—even after they’ve turned 16, the legal age of consent in Rhode Island—both teachers’ unions made their objections known. NEA RI didn’t have anyone testify but Pat Crowley did sign in to the hearing and note his opposition to the bill. I suspect the NEA also submitted written testimony. James Parisi of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) did testify—in fact, we sat beside one another, each offering our very different opinions on the bill.

As it currently stands, Rhode Island is one of a few states where it is perfectly legal for teachers and other school employees to have sexual relations with their students once they turn 16. It’s literally a dirty little secret—almost no one seems to be aware of this loophole in the law and yet it leaves high school students without any protection from those who would sexually abuse them after their 16th birthday. We are also a state who, after a year long investigation by USA Today, received a grade of D for how well we track and share information about teachers who are also alleged abusers.

Parisi expressed that the UFT’s opposition to the bill lies mostly in the fact that it singles out school employees. He wonders why “store managers” aren’t included? Last time I checked, children aren’t, by law, in the custodial care of store managers from kindergarten through 12th grade. He wondered why clergy and the legislature weren’t also included in the bill but again, unless their role as clergy and legislators includes custodial responsibilities of children, his examples aren’t logical in this context. If the member of the clergy also teaches at a school, then yes. If the legislator is also a high school basketball coach, then yes.

In all honesty, to a small extent, his point is well taken. There is no reason why the protection of children shouldn’t extend to all adults who are in positions of authority or acting “in “loco parentis” when they are with minors. Plenty of states have that broader language written into their consent laws. But to equate a store manager with an 11th grade teacher or school bus driver is patently absurd and insulting to parents who think this bill is a long over due slam dunk.

Parisi also claims that this isn’t really a problem here and that the loss of one’s current job and state teaching license is punishment enough. I’m sorry, what? Just because he has somehow decided this isn’t an issue doesn’t mean that we should continue to be a state where sex between teachers and students is legal. And Parisi, and every other person employed by a teachers’ union, are well versed in the very grim reality that sexual predators move from district to district and state to state—termination and loss of licensure are not sufficient deterrents and certainly do not protect children. Sure—it may help us get rid of abusers but I hope we aren’t ok with sending people who harm our students off to other states where they can hurt the children there. In a 2018 report, NPR’s Erin Logan says this:

“That cycle — abuse, dismissal, rehire and abuse again — is one that experts and researchers say is far too common across the nation. It has long been known as “passing the trash,” and despite years of efforts to make policies to keep it from happening, no one really knows how often it does.”

We don’t have to reinvent the wheel because plenty of states have language that protects students, under the law and if we can broaden it even more in the future, then great. But we currently have a bill on the table that at least does the job of addressing the issue in our schools.

Here are a few examples of how other states do it so much better than we do by including a clause about people in positions of authority:

The video of our testimony in front of the house judiciary committee begins here at [1:22:13] —unfortunately, most members of the committee were gone by the time Mr. Parisi and I testified. I assume they are members of other committees that had hearings happening at the same time, which was the case for my representative, Alex Marszalkowski, who sponsored the bill I was there to support. It’s too bad that attendance was so sparse because I would have enjoyed the opportunity to speak about this with more than just the handful of legislators who were left in the room. I am confident that most, if not all, would have been surprised to learn that it is perfectly legal for teachers and school employees to have sex with students once they’ve turned 16. Hopefully, they will get up to speed, watch the testimony, and ask their constituents how they feel about being one of only a few states that appears to believe that sex between students and teachers should not be a crime.

Note: In my testimony, I make reference to public schools and public employees—mostly in the context of union pushback and compulsory education laws—but in hindsight I realize that it might have sounded like I was implying that the law would only apply to public school employees. That is NOT the case. It would cover all school employees (and vendors and volunteers) in all kinds of schools.

Here is the one year investigation by USA Today that I reference in my testimony. The graphic above showing how poorly we track disciplinary actions against teachers can be found at the USA Today link as well.

How hard is it to wait til graduation to do one of your teachers? In some areas of the states, it's illegal even if you're above the age of 18 to have sex with your teacher while you're a student (unless legally married). There are situations where this may be mutual and genuine, but they're far outweighed by the exploitative.
