It's nowhere near October, but one ensemble is already on track to be named the most controversial Halloween costume of 2015.

Social media users were out in full force on Monday criticizing several Halloween retailers for offering a Caitlyn Jenner costume reminiscent of the former-athlete's Vanity Fair cover earlier this year.

While Jenner's supporters condemned the costume as "transphobic" and "disgusting" on Twitter, Spirit Halloween, a retailer that carries the costume, defended the getup.

"At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes," said Lisa Barr, senior director of marking at Spirit Halloween. "We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that."
 

Woman says man held her against her will, forced her to watch 'Roots' to understand racism
The woman said that when she tried to move, Robert Noye told her to remain seated and made threats to kill her.

An Iowa man is accused of forcing a woman to watch the miniseries "Roots," purportedly to better understand her racism.

The man, Robert Lee Noye, 52, faces charges of harassment and false imprisonment, according to Greg Buelow, the public safety spokesman for Cedar Rapids.

On Monday, Cedar Rapids police were sent to an area in the city for an open-line 911 call "with lots of screaming," police said in a statement.

Dispatchers and officers were able to find the home by using GPS. When they arrived, an intoxicated man, later identified as Noye, answered the door, police said.

A 37-year-old woman and her 12-year-old daughter were found crying inside, police said.

The woman told police that Noye had been assaulting her all night and had made her sit with him to watch the miniseries "Roots," based on Alex Haley's bestselling book "Roots: The Saga of an American Family," which drew attention to the brutality of slavery. The miniseries aired on ABC in 1977 and won a host of awards, including multiple Emmys and a Peabody.

The woman said that when she tried to move, Noye told her to remain seated and made threats to kill her.

She was eventually able to call 911 and leave the line open, according to police.

Noye was arrested and taken to the Linn County Jail. He was not listed as an inmate as of Tuesday evening.

An amateur soccer player in France has been suspended for five years for biting an opponent’s penis during a fight on the pitch.

The incident occurred during a game in November between SC Terville and AS Soetrich, two clubs in the eastern region of Lorraine, separated by just a 10-minute drive. When two players began fighting, the unidentified victim (a Terville player) stepped in to break it up, according to local news site Lorraine Actu. That’s when the Soetrich player bit the Terville player on the penis.

The victim was forced to go to the emergency room, where he received a dozen stitches to close the wound and was deemed unfit to work for four days.

The matter was referred to the disciplinary arm of the local soccer governing body, which ruled this week that the Soetrich player be suspended for five years. His club was also fined €200.

Incredibly, the victim and his club were also punished. He was suspended until June 30, 2020, for his actions in the locker room and in the parking lot. Terville was fined €200 and docked two points in the league standings.
 
I’m surprised it was the French. Thought it would have been Eastern European or Latin American. Those people can be brutal when it comes to soccer.

New York (CNN Business)Burger King is re-"molding" the image of its signature Whopper in a nauseating new ad campaign that promotes efforts to eliminate artificial preservatives and other additives from the company's menu.

The burger chain on Wednesday unveiled pictures of its new, preservative-free Whopper. In the campaign, the Whopper is covered in mold, decaying as it's consumed by green fungus.

The unconventional marketing effort includes a TV commercial showing the all-natural Whopper slowly rotting over the course of 34 days as soul singer Dina Washington's 1959 hit "What a Difference A Day Makes" plays in the background. Deliberately absent are food coloring and special effects commonly used to make restaurant meals and their ingredients look appetizing in commercials. By the end of the 45-second commercial, the Whopper has transformed into a green and blue mess.

"The beauty of no artificial preservatives," the ad's tagline reads.

The moldy Whopper may look revolting, but Restaurant Brands International (QSR), which owns Burger King, is betting customers are craving healthier, organic ingredients. Just over half of Millennials and 57% of Millennial parents said they are buying more organic products now than they did five years prior, according to a September YouGov analysis commissioned by Whole Foods. A 2018 Nielsen report also found young adults are more willing to pay higher prices for products made with natural, more environmentally-friendly ingredients.

Burger King restaurants throughout most of Europe have already done away with food preservatives amid an industry-wide shift toward healthier and organic ingredients.

"We believe that real food tastes better," Restaurant Brands International Global Chief Marketing Officer Fernando Machado said in a statement. "That's why we are working hard to remove preservatives, colors and flavors from artificial sources from the food we serve in all countries around the world."

Whopper fans in the United States may have already tasted a preservative-free Whopper without realizing it, according to Christopher Finazzo, president if Burger King's Americas division.

"The product is already available in more than 400 restaurants in the country and will reach all restaurants throughout the year," Finazzo said in a statement.

McDonald's (MCD), Burger King, and Wendy's (WEN) are the three largest burger chains in the United States. McDonald's stopped using preservatives in some of its burger ingredients in 2018, two years after removing antibiotics from its chicken supply chain. Wendy's did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Jars of preserved human tongues found in Florida home

Police in Florida are investigating the gruesome discovery of jars of human tongues in a home’s crawlspace, according to a report.

The preserved organs were found during an inspection of the foundation in the Gainesville house, which was previously owned by Ronald Baughman, a former University of Florida researcher, according to WCJB.

Some of the jars date back to the 1960s.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that Baughman, who published studies in the following two decades, may have brought the tongues home as part of his work, the news outlet reported.

Baughman currently is a professor emeritus at the university, it added.

A 1988 abstract in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery posted on medical research site ScienceDirect lists a Ronald A. Baughman as a dentist involved in a case of oral squamous cell carcinoma in twins.

Tweet of a "skull breaker"

A new dangerous trend taking over TikTok is now making headlines as parents across the globe warn of the severe harm it can cause.The “skull breaker challenge” originated in Spain when two students began to film themselves executing the seemingly harmless move with an unsuspecting third participant. The trend captures three individuals standing in a row before jumping straight up. While the middle person is in the air, the two on the sides kick inwards to knock them off of their feet and onto their head.However, its dangers quickly became evident as the middle participant continued to become the victim of injuries to the head, neck and wrist. At least two children in the United States have been hospitalized after attempting the challenge.One viral video out of Colombia, in particular, demonstrated how a person can sustain an injury from the stunt — dubbed “Rompecráneos” in Spanish, meaning skull cracker — when the student fell onto the back of his head on the ground outside of his school. Although the video has since been removed from social media, the video is archived on Twitter. Administrators of the school where it took place also took to social media to condemn it.

“Recently, a video has been made viral on social networks, in which some baccalaureate students of our institution are exposed, making a game where the ... physical integrity of one of the young people would allegedly be put at risk. In the aforementioned video, the badge of the College is clearly distinguished, whose symbol represents the institutions,” one of the school’s tweets, translated in English, reads.
Despite the injuries that some international outlets reported, the school did not address any serious harm caused by the stunt, other than “the alarm that the events occurred may cause.” Still, the statement goes on to say, “the parties involved (the students with their respective representatives) were summoned to the Directorate of the College to initiate the corresponding procedures, attached to the relevant legal provisions.”
The Feb. 4 statement didn’t prevent the trend from spreading, as it became popular in India, the United Arab Emirates and the U.S. Now, parents in the U.S. are doing their part to shed light on the severity of the stunt by posting warnings attached to photos of their injured children on Facebook.

“I really contemplated posting this, but I feel there needs to be awareness of this malicious cruel viral prank,” Arizona mother Valerie Hodson wrote on Facebook about her young son who was tricked in the stunt by two friends. “He landed hard flat on his back and head, as he struggled to get up he lost consciousness, he fell forward landing on his face. The school monitor ran to his side, all the while the 2 boys were snickering and laughing as his stiff unconscious body lay on the asphalt. Fast forward at the hospital, he has a head injury, stiches [sic] in his face, severe cuts inside his mouth and 2 front teeth I have to keep on eye on. This apparently is a Tik Tok viral prank being filmed and gaining likes on social media.”
Days later, a mom in Alabama posted a similar warning, this time asking for prayers for her son who had to get surgery on his wrist as a result of the TikTok prank.
“The safety and well-being of our users is a top priority at TikTok,” a TikTok spokesperson tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “As we make clear in our Community Guidelines, we do not allow content that encourages, promotes, or glorifies dangerous challenges that might lead to injury, and we remove reported behavior or activity that violates our guidelines. To help keep our platform safe, we have introduced a slate of safety features geared towards enhancing our users’ experience, including tools for reporting inappropriate content and for managing privacy settings.”
Videos of the skull breaker challenge on TikTok have been replaced by “skull saver” challenges, in which users are reenacting the challenge without the hazardous kick, as well as public service announcements about the dangerous stunt.
According to Nathan Richards, MD, a physician who specializes in internal medicine and pediatrics at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, both outcomes were better than the irreversible damage that can occur. The skull breaker challenge, he tells Yahoo Lifestyle, can even be fatal.
“The skull breaker challenge is an emerging prank being propagated on social media that results in forceful trauma to the head and neck area. It can be associated with a variety of serious and even life-threatening injuries including, but not limited to, bruising, hematoma, skull fracture, neck strain, neck fracture, concussion and long term complications of concussion, bleeding in or around the brain, loss of consciousness, paralysis, and death,” Richards explains. “Although it can seem like a harmless prank to children and adolescents, they should be educated on the potential serious consequences of doing the skull breaker challenge.”
Denise Klinkner, MD, a pediatric surgeon at the Mayo Clinic Children’s Center in Rochester, Minnesota adds that the person in the middle of the stunt will likely become injured even if prepared for what it entails. “In spite of knowing this is the intent, the falling teen rapidly lands without blocking the fall, leading to at minimum a concussion,” she says. “If one is able, an outstretched hand to block the fall may lead to a broken wrist or arm.”
As for why children and teens continue to take part in these challenges despite knowing the potential danger, Sabrina Sykes, PhD, a psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center writes that it’s all about the “wow factor.”
“New online challenges routinely spring up and rapidly spread over social media, particularly among adolescents and young adults,” Sykes explained in a blog post about the appeal of online challenges. “Social media, in turn, offers instant popularity among peers in the form of ‘likes’ and ‘followers,’ providing peer acceptance, buoying the teen’s self-concept and, therefore, enhancing the draw to participate in these challenges.”
She went on to credit the still-developing prefrontal cortex for an adolescent’s inability to manage their impulses or make responsible decisions, working in tandem with the very real fear of missing out. “This means teens are highly motivated to engage in socially rewarding behavior and gravitate toward thrill-seeking, without focusing on potential risks or consequences,” she wrote.
Still, parents and adults can intervene in their teen’s online behavior, according to Sykes, and take part in productive conversations that can improve a child’s judgment.
“Parents should familiarize themselves with social media platforms and engage their teen in conversations about online challenges,” Sykes’ post reads. “Remember that while teens continue to grow and navigate social relationships, through these conversations parents can foster the development of thoughtful and rational thinking skills, while also maintaining connection.”

A group calling itself P.U.T.I.N., Pigeons United To Interfere Now, claimed responsibility for the stunt. The pigeons were set loose Tuesday, according to the group.

NBC affiliate KSNV spotted at least one of the pigeons still in a hat on a downtown street Wednesday afternoon.

"P.U.T.I.N. have used their pigeons to launch a one of a kind aerial protest piece in response to the arrival of the 2020 Democratic Presidential hopefuls," according to a group statement. "The release date was also coordinated to serve as a gesture of support and loyalty to President Trump."

Twenty-five pigeons were released, 24 of them wearing hats and one donning a Trump-style wig, the group said Thursday in an email to NBC News.

"Most have returned. We expect to see the rest tonight or tomorrow," the group said.

While the stunt has drawn some laughs, Mariah Hillman, who runs Lofty Hopes, a Las Vegas pigeon rescue organization, called the MAGA stunt "animal cruelty."

In December, videos of three pigeons wearing miniature red cowboy hats went viral after they were seen on Las Vegas streets.

"It started here with the press making fun of it, the police didn't do anything about it, and now it's grown into this, so when is it going to stop, and who's going to do something about it?" Hillman said Thursday.

Hillman and her volunteers are setting traps in hope of removing the pigeons' hats before rehabilitating and releasing the birds.

The pigeons are wearing the hats with the help of eyelash glue.

"It doesn't matter what kind of glue it is. It is still, in fact, cruelty, because you are impairing their vision," Hillman said, adding that her organization rescues many birds, such as wedding-release pigeons and racing pigeons, that are trained to return to their flocks.

"There's not always a guarantee that they'll return, because they can get injured or killed before that happens."
