New classification of diseases of WHO will take power in 2022
The world health organization (WHO) has removed transgender from its list of mental disorders.
In the new draft of the international classification of diseases (ICD-11), gender mismatch moved to the section on sexual health.
“Another new Chapter on sexual health brings together disorders that were previously classified in other ways (for example, the gender discrepancy was previously considered a mental disorder) or were described differently,” – said in a statement by the WHO.

Gender incongruence, meanwhile, has also been moved out of mental disorders in the ICD, into sexual health conditions. The rationale being that while evidence is now clear that it is not a mental disorder, and indeed classifying it in this can cause enormous stigma for people who are transgender, there remain significant health care needs that can best be met if the condition is coded under the ICD.
