Internet question - Is Fiber worth it?

Heya fellow Kiwis!

Got a bit of a dumb question for ya!

Right now I have a 100/30mbit cable line but for like 5$ less I can get a 300/50mbit line.

No brainer, right?

However. For 15$ more I can get a 1000/500 fiber line.

I use the Internet for regular stuff, streaming and gaming. Aside from the whole “more is better” would I feel a major difference? Is it worth it? Would it make a big difference in for example gaming?

Known it's a bit of a dumb question, just wondering if there’s a big difference latency wise with fiber vs cable and if anyone has any practical experience in games.

Thanks!

(Yes, I also posted in the technical sub forum, but was hoping to hear what a gamer with Fiber might think!)

If you torrent or use clouds (or if looking at speedtest results makes you smile) go for the gbit 100%, depending on where you live fiber is probably gonna get you a better ping
Though to be completetly honest you wont feel that much of a difference, google drive saturates at 70-80mbit for me and thats one of the fastest

If you're a forever alone faggot? No. If you share an internet connection or do lots of torrenting? Yes, absolutely. Especially given that gigabit plans usually (at least in my area) don't have data caps.

Depends on your connection to the ISP, if you're only on 100mbit, and your home network isn't noisy within the network (like 20 people streaming from a media server) then there isn't much point in getting cable that is better. (Even then, it'll only really affect the internet speed of those using the busy cables unless your router starts bottlenecking)

Fibre is better latency over longer distance, also more resistant to interference. Over a distance less than a mile neither of those mean shit.

($5 less? Is someone paying you to take the second cable?)

Nah, you know how it goes... You signed up a year or two ago, then check the newest prices and realize that their newest offerings are cheaper and faster than what you signed up for.

Fortunately it’s a monthly contract so it’s not like I have to wait 6 months or something.

Thanks for the advice y’all! It can get busy here sometimes internet wise, and lower ping sounds good.

Plus I’ve noticed some fuckery like once a month where the cable just stops working for hours at a time.

Sorry, I'm an idiot, I thought you were talking about networking cable.

As far as internet line goes, like everyone else is saying depends on your usage. Higher speed cable won't help latency (unless speed is maxxed out) and can make interference worse (if the line has shit SNR).

Fibre may help latency slightly, but I don't think its all that much since the fibre that they install is from the exchange to your home or local cabinet (I know light is much faster than electricity but how much latency would a few miles of fibre actually shave off?).
As far as interference goes, it will help, but a lot of the fuckery could be problems with the ISP's network or at the exchange. Usually interference is somewhat more consistent, however doesn't rule it out.

If you know people with the same ISP on the same exchange, you can ask them whether or not they get shit internet monthly. Preferably a heavy user, someone who just uses the internet to look up cat pictures/videos probably won't notice shit internet as much.

I would. Once you have a great internet connection you'll find all sorts of ways to chew up that upload bandwidth. IP cameras, media servers that you can access from anywhere in the world, reliable remote desktop connections to home while traveling, etc...

I have fiber. It's rate-limited, though. For 9.90 a month I get 100mbit. For 19.90 I would get 1000mbit.

I stick to the 100mbit option. Even though I torrent movies and such it makes no fucking difference whether I can download a movie in 3 minutes or 30 seconds. I see no reason to upgrade to 1gbit other than posting speedtest screenshots for e-peen.

e. As for ping I get 1ms as it is, makes no difference.

Makes sense I guess. It’s not rate limited though and 1000/500 is the only option. Seems like decent deal for 45$ a month considering I pay little over 30$ right now for a 100/30 connection that goes down at least once a month.

If you're being cable-cucked, go fot it.

Short, greedy answer: Yes, get it, and revel in your status as a Low Ping Bastard.

Longer answer: That cable infrastructure could've been laid decades ago. Fiber gear is much newer. Now think about how much companies like to spend money on maintenance...

It's a meme for ISPs to get free money out of retards.

If you're getting close to a constant 100 mbps now, I can almost guarantee you won't find a difference unless you use cloud gaming or download a lot of big files. 100 mbps is enough to have like 20 1080p video streams going at once. You have to remember that you're also limited by the speed of server you're connecting to, so if you're playing COD online and the server you're connected to only allows a 20 mbps connection per player, that's still going to max out at 20 mbps even with a 1 gbps connection.

I'm on 70mbps and I can download a 1080p episode of a TV show in like two minutes, that's not even long enough to take a piss.

You should take the deal on the 300mbps if there's no catch like a cap or anything though, obviously.

TLDR: It's worth paying extra in very select situations.
