Almost 25 years ago, the original PlayStation was introduced to the world. Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, it was the first home console in video game history to ship 100 million units worldwide, offering consumers a chance to play games with real-time 3D rendered graphics in their homes for the first time.

Today, we are excited to announce that we are bringing back the original PlayStation experience in a new miniaturized version – PlayStation Classic! The console will come pre-loaded with 20 classic titles, including fan-favorites such as Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms.

The mini console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation, and it emulates the original’s look and feel by featuring similar controllers and packaging. Long-time fans will appreciate the nostalgia that comes with rediscovering the games they know and love, while gamers who might be new to the platform can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation console experience that started it all. All of the pre-loaded games will be playable in their original format.

Available for pre-order at select retailers across the US and CAN, each unit will also come with an HDMI cable to connect to their TV, a USB cable, and two controllers for local multiplayer within compatible titles. PlayStation Classic will be available for $99.99 USD (MSRP) / $129.99 CAN (MSRP) on December 3, 2018 – a historic date for all of us at PlayStation.

Visit PlayStation.com for more details on regional availability, and stay tuned to the Blog for the full lineup of titles coming to PlayStation Classic. There are more fan favorites, and we can’t wait to share more details in the coming months.

So guys the full library is not announced.. we know we're getting Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms. However, that still leaves most of the titles unrevealed... What are your thoughts on this device and what games do you HOPE are included?

I also find it odd they don't have any PSN support. It would be an easy way to sell memory cards and drive PSone digital purchases in their shop.

Now I know why Sony isn't putting PS1 classics on the PS4 or letting you play PS1 discs on the PS4, it's so they can rip hipsters off. It's not like this remotely has a point since a PS1 is cheap, many games are cheap, the PS1-3 can play PS1 discs, and modchips are easy to install.

It depends on what 20 games (which they haven't a full list of yet), the quality of the product, and of course user feedback. Is it going to be sleek like Nintendo's minis or more like Sega's Chinese knockoffs? Also there is the matter of censorship, and whether they will be going through and Anita-proofing old character models and/or cutscenes.

So $99 may or may not be fair based on these standards of mine.

What games would you like to see?

What games would you like to see?

Resident Evil 1-3, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Silent Hill, the Tomb Raider games, Xenogears, Driver, possibly Chrono Cross.

If it's to be anything like the Nintendo minis there should be a focus on a wide range of genres while picking the most popular among all of them. Throw in fighters. There would also need to be a few classic RPGs, beloved but impossible to get physically now without spending hundreds of dollars. On that note, Lunar would be a nice addition.

Will it have Legend of Dragoon on it? If you're talking "legendary titles", that's one of them.

I mean... You could just make the consoles backwards compatible. You could even load up 50 good PS1 classics into new PS4s, that'd be an amazing selling point. Right now, asking 7,5 bucks a piece for 20 PS1 "Classics", and god fucking knows what shovelware they'll throw in there... Ps1 had some really, really bad games. And the graphics and controls have aged like molk for the most part. I can imagine since Square's already on board they'll at least throw in the remarkable Bushido Blade, but even that has a disappointing second part... I dunno.

Almost none of these games are worth 5 bucks nowadays. I mean, Tekken 3's great, but paying 150 bucks to play a game you've probably already played the crap out of, with no new features... Sounds like a pretty tough sale to me.

Plus why are we even discussing this at all? Yarr harr, fiddle dee dee...

Like The Shadow already said, it would be nice if Gran Turismo 1 and 2 could be included though I suspect they won't due to licensing issues with cars, logos, and music. But I see Gran Turismo 2 quite often at thrift stores for below $5, so it's not a huge loss to me if it's not pre-loaded.

If the console included a mode with unlimited draw distance for PS1 racing games (or any 3D game, for that matter), it'd drastically improve the experience compared to playing them on an actual 1990s Playstation console (I think mine still works but I haven't tried it lately). I can accept the janky low-res textures and low polygon count on original Playstation games but the low draw distance is the factor that makes most PSX racing games, even the great ones, nigh unplayable compared to Playstation 2 racing games, many of which I still play to this day.

My interest level in a Playstation Classic is "maybe if I can get it on sale", assuming they don't artificially limit the supply like with most recent retro consoles. But a Playstation 2 Classic would be a must buy for me since it's the top console I collect for but my PS2 Slim has issues reading disks now, sometimes in the middle of games and Sony recently stopped supporting repairs on the PS2, leading me to suspect a PS2 Classic is in the works.

EDIT: Yeah, pretty much as soon as I wrote this post earlier I found out that the Playstation Classic doesn't have an optical drive to play old Playstation games, which kills any interest I might have had in it. Say what you will about AtGames and their buggy Sega Genesis/MegaDrive retro consoles, at least they got one thing right, namely the ability to play pretty much any Genesis/MegaDrive game right off the cartridge (with the exception of Virtua Racing because of the unsupported Sega Virtua Processor chip that that particular cartridge used).
