Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus Trailer Released

I really liked it a lot. It seems a tiny bit less cynical and a lot less nihilistic than I remember the show being, but by the end that was working for me, especially when they got down to what the story was really about. I hope Vasquez does more animated Zim in the future.
That's probably because of Jhonen Vazquez mellowing out over the years.
Back in 2001, it was really fucking obvious that Jhonen hated people, and made stuff like Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Zim to mock Americans for being, in his own words "too focused on the little things in life" and being "too dense to see the bigger picture" or something along those lines. Man was a major misanthrope back then.

But looking at the semi-softer art style in the new movie, and the only real "mean" moment being the Pizzahog joke, and Dib being shit on remarkably less in this movie than he was in the original, Jhonen's definitely lightened up. And I think it's for the better.

The title presentation/cut to the beginning was a nice Army of Darkness reference.

The whole Dib Membrane vs. in the smoke before Invader Zim pops up then the lightning strike and flashes before the cut in.

Edit: Just finished watching it, was pretty solid overall. It did seem a little less grim but they kept everybody except Dib and Gaz retarded as fuck, just as it should be.

I'm a huge Zim fan and I'm so happy I'm not disappointed. Everything looked and felt right, and only used the first revival comic as a brief stepping stone for original content. Pretty much the only things I'd have liked to seen again were Skoodge, Miss Bitters (as in, not a cameo), or any of the planned reoccurring characters like Tak and the Resisty, but I understand that the plot couldn't have fit them in so I'm actually okay that they didn't make the cut. I don't expect there to be more animated Zim after this, but I didn't expect the revival comic in the first place either, so by that virtue alone it already exceeded my expectations.

FYI, the "darkness" in Zim is a damn meme. Fools act like the whole show was just episodes like Dark Harvest and ignore all the straight wackiness the show had.
I think people forget because of the overall tone of the series was way more cynical than any other Nicktoon before it (though I expect some Ren and Stimpy fan to lecture me on why I'm wrong). But yes, there were way more episodes like Invasion of the Idiot Dog Brain and Attack of the Saucer Morons than Dark Harvest and Bad, Bad Rubber Piggy.

Another huge fan and I was very satisfied with the special. I think the emotional moments between Dib and his family made it feel more fulfilling. A lot of Zim fans write sentimental fanfics anyways so they won’t mind and will probably appreciate the emotional moments.

My only complaint is the moments where flash was used was obvious and really awkward.

Miss Bitters (as in, not a cameo),
They left her out because the voice actress has passed.

Fortunately, it seemed likely there would probably be more even before this one got the positive reception it did. As long as Vasquez comtines to have a platform to express what’s on his mind through animation, I’m good.

I couldn't resist posting this here. Found it on /co/.

From what I recall, Vasquez was approached to do a series with him refusing. They negotiotaed into a miniseries, and last a movie. I think while he's not ashamed of his work, he doesn't really want to be known as just "The Zim Man" and wants to stick to comics.

I think the best we can hope for from both Vasquez's wishes and the movie's ending would be more movies that could give spotlight to elements like Tak or what the Irkens are doing without their leaders.

I second the comics. They are more toned down in a good way despite what the edgelords who haven’t left their early 2000’s child hood edgy phase say. Rewatching the show most of the edge didn’t age well. In the comics characters like Gaz are actually likeable and it makes them so much more interesting. In the show Gaz was just a one dimensional sociopath.

I remember Vasquez saying that Invader Zim was one of the most labor intensive things he had ever done and not necessarily in a good way. I’m not surprised that he turned down returning to animation for an extended period of time when the Zim comics, his home turf, are ongoing thing and doing well.

More Movies definitely hits the sweet spot though. The music, action set pieces and voice acting can’t be duplicated in comic form for obvious reasons.

To be fair that's how Jhonen was at the time. He was a huge edgelord. He is the creator of Johny the homicidal maniac and he sneaked out a bloody Gir, which doesn't seem like a big deal, but this was a cartoon meant for literal children.

Invader Zim was, underneath the humor, fairly pessimistic and edgy.

Seems like Vasquez has mellowed out over the years. And honestly, I like it.

The Youtube link is down, but I found it on KissCartoon.

Yet another huge fan here - I loved it. The nostalgia was strong and it made me chuckle quite a few times. The voice actors haven't lost their touch either. Bravo, Jhonen.

Also yes, the comics are worth reading.

Actually Nick approached Jhonen with the intent at creating a series aimed primarily at middle schoolers. But you wouldn't know it with the time slots used, or the shows it followed and preceded in those time slots. Nick didn't even care about bloody Gir when they found out because it was only ever inserted into one frame per episode and never at full opacity, so kids would never notice it.

Well, I do consider middle schoolers to also be children. Most of them are preteens . Aren’t they? As for the bloody Gir, IRCC, Jhonen did try to have it shown to kids, but after being denied he resorted to hiding it, so I think the edgelord intent is still there, regardless if Nick didn't care later,

Finished it an hour ago but I had to let it sink in because good God that was fantastic, it's literally like the show never left and reminded me why it is I actually do like the show, even though its fanbase is utterly exceptional at times. I had the dopiest grin on my face the whole time from the start, the meta-humor was spot on. I know a lot of shows getting reboots/revivals/sequels years after it aired have that meta-humor poking fun of its cancellation/hiatus or whatnot, but this film had the self-awareness to literally mock itself for it and I loved it.

The art and animation are fucking beautiful, like holy shit it's just a seamless upgrade. Outside of Tallest Red (I think it's the same guy, but I don't think it is?), and maybe Tallest Purple, the voice-actors weren't awkward in their performances. They never changed, but they have much more experience under their belt since the last time they recorded for the show, and you can tell they were having fun being their characters again. The "lulz randem XD" humor is still prevalent, but it's enhanced by the spectacular storyboarding and timing, and even Zim was just letting himself go at some points.

Professor Membrane's character felt natural. Like it's weird they had this arc revolving around his and Dib's rocky relationship, but the way he interacted with everything around him with as little facial emoting as physically possible and only getting it across by exaggerated angular body language is so much fun to watch. Fake!Membrane was surprisingly endearing. Like you guys weren't kidding lol.

I feel like the Tallest had it coming for a long time. I didn't know if they were ever going to get their comeuppance or just desserts, but their arrogance and haughty nature finally caught up to them, and they have to pay the consequences. I dunno how they're going to get out of that, if at all, but fucking GOOD. The usage of multiple art-styles and animation techniques during the dimension merge was to be expected, but it's so fucking trippy and I love it. I enjoy it when shows allow their animators to go crazy and throw in their own unique touches, and I think that alone was the love letter to fans was Vasquez going "Have at it." Whoever was behind the moment where they were all dogs in costumes gets a thumbs-up from me.

Also "Peace is Nice" killed me because I actually did have some chicken (dumplings) and rice for dinner tonight. Thank you, Gir.

So yeah, definite rewatch value for me, and I really need to get into the comics, I've been meaning to. Got a quick question, though, was there a Jhonen and Steve Russel cameo anywhere? My eyes were too busy being blinded by the eye candy to think about looking for them.
