EU Ireland Hate Speech Law Would Make It Illegal to Possess ‘Reckless’ Memes - Irish authorities have already opened an investigation into MMA star Conor McGregor over social media posts related to last week's riots in Dublin

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said the country would pass new legislation to crack down on racist hate speech online, a move that critics fear will erode free speech by making certain memes and other digital materials illegal.

The bill would give the government more power to prosecute individuals who post "reckless" comments or memes that "incite violence or hatred against a person or a group of persons," Varadkar said.

But self-proclaimed free speech advocates, including X owner Elon Musk, warned that the legislation is so broad that it could be wielded against ordinary citizens.

Varadkar referenced the government's planned hate speech reforms after hundreds of anti-immigration protesters stormed downtown Dublin last week, setting fire to cars and looting local shops and businesses believed to be frequented by migrants.

The rioters had reportedly become enraged after learning that the suspect in a stabbing attack near the capital last Thursday may have been an Algerian national. That assailant injured at least three children and a woman outside of a primary school.

At least 34 people were arrested, including some who reportedly threw rocks at crowd control officers, the Associated Press reported.

Along with the hate speech bill, the government intends to pass additional legislation that would allow law enforcement to use facial recognition technology to identify individuals who participate in violent riots.

Varadkar said the legislation would help the country adapt to the "social media era," adding that its current laws weren't able to fully protect immigrants and other marginalized communities from violence.

"It's not just the platforms that have a responsibility here, and they do, it's also the individuals who post messages and images online that stir up hatred and violence," he said.

"We need to be able to use laws to go after them individually."

The government has insisted that the bill's language closely mirrors current Irish laws, and that it would still leave room for dissenting opinions online.

"You will still be able to offend other people or express views which make others uncomfortable," one recent version of the bill reads, per the BBC.

But critics say the government has offered little guidance about what constitutes "hate speech" — adding that even Facebook posts, tweets, and memes could run afoul of the new law, which would slap violators with up to five years in prison.

Meanwhile, Irish authorities have reportedly opened an investigation into MMA star and Irish citizen Conor McGregor over remarks he posted on social media in the aftermath of the riots.

Kinda weird how most hate speech investigations in these countries target prominent people who criticize the government

The proles get fined and misdemeanored as a matter of routine without media attention past conservative internet media bitching about it, but someone with name recognition and a following who criticizes the government gets an "investigation" announced in the national media, it's a Very Serious Moment that must be broadcast to the masses

Europe is still geostrategically valuable and it's political establishment has been an extension of Blue America since the end of WW2. THey love laundering their preferred policy initiatives through Europe which is why e.g. American activist billionairs dump money to support energy transition policies in Germany and then tout their success and pedigree as "surperior and enlightened policy" as a reason to adopt the same in the US.
Same here with the Poojeet-in-Chief being used as a proxy to pressure Elon Musk in particular to readopt wideranging censorship on Twitter after they got slapped a bit domestically.

Which is how I can tell when a "GOP" president is "fake right".
The EU no longer has anything we could want, drains half our defense budget, oppresses their people and OURS by their laws overshadowing the web, and betrays us on china and iran.

We should be cutting them loose and allying with Russia and India.

Fianna Fáil Cllr says he’d like to see Dublin rioters “shot in the head” and beaten “until they die”

A Fianna Fáil Councillor has triggered uproar after he said that he would “like to see” those behind the Dublin riots “shot in the head” – or beaten by the public “until they die.”

Limerick City West Councillor Abul Kalam Azad Talukder made the remarks during a Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) meeting on Monday, as councillors discussed the angry and violent scenes which spilled across Dublin city centre last Thursday, in the aftermath of a knife attack on three children and their creche worker.

The Limerick Post carried the comments, which have gained significant traction on social media. Cllr Talukder, who is Cathaoirleach of LCCC’s Metropolitan District, told the meeting, in reference to those who rioted, “they should get public punishment.”

“I strongly believe that this is not the face of Ireland. This is just some criminals looting the shops. I don’t think they follow any ideological purpose. They come to the streets and just rob. They should get punishment,” he said.

“Not even an animal does these kind of thing. It is very shameful and they should get public punishment.

“I’d like to see them shot in the head or bring the public in and beat them until they die,” he told the meeting.

The local newspaper reports that Labour Councillor Conor Sheehan, responding, called for an “immediate withdrawal” of the comments, telling Cllr Talukder: “You can’t call for people to be shot in the council chamber”.

Cllr Talukder replied, “Ok, I can withdraw that. I just put my emotion only. I hope Conor Sheehan understands that is only an expression of my emotion.”

The unequivocal comments are the source of furore tonight, with social media users describing them as “shocking” and “unbelievable.”

A number of commentators classed the remarks as “very concerning” coming from an elected representative.

“I had to check to see if this was real,” one person on X said.

Others questioned whether the Council remarks would qualify as “hate speech” under Ireland’s much-talked about Bill.

The comments received a response from MMA star Conor McGregor, who described the comments as “fully criminal” in a post on X:

The Councillor was first elected to Limerick City West in 2019, an accomplishment he described as a “historic moment” – as he became Limerick’s first ever Muslim Councillor.

Councillor Talukder, who is originally from Bangladesh, made history again back in June for becoming the first Muslim to be elected as Cathaoirleach of Limerick Metropolitan Counci. The businessman and taxi driver was nominated for the role by his party colleague and former Mayor of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr James Collins, along with another party colleague, Cllr Catherine Slattery.

At the time, Mr Talukder thanked the people of Limerick who elected him as a councillor, as someone who came “from a different background, beyond the colour, ethnicity and religion”.

He is yet to release a comment in response to his remarks made on Monday night. Cllr Talukder has been contacted by Gript for comment.

This could have been a thread but @karz is a sack of shit.

The Irish trying to make it a three-way race with AU and CN for biggest english speaking authoritarian shitholes. While bad, they are going to have to try a little harder than this to keep up though.

>immigrant stabs 3 people
>the law doesn't protect immigrants from violence well enough

:story:

This is how western progressive ideology is programed to think these days. The greatest threat and crime here was the "anti-immigrant" speech. I mean let's be real.. If the protest that happened were over some black-block, letter cause, or a black criminal thug getting shot in the US, we'd be listening to them complain about the dangers of misinformation over the "mostly-peaceful" protests.

The neat thing is even normies are starting to notice that and I have normie friends and family, totally apolitical NPCs, who are starting to talk about jewish power, white replacement, and getting rid of all these minorities.

I'm Irish and I'll probably get arrested for posting this, if I don't get arrested just for posting on the notorious hate site known as Kiwi Farms in the first place. It was fun while it lasted guys.
Hey, I'm Scottish, and with Hamas Humza getting his hate speech law through, I'm looking at the jail come February.

How do Scots justify the wars for independence and the ongoing nationalist movement if they're just going to give their country away to shitskins for free? I have similar questions for the Irish.
I want to answer this in a serious manner, but it'd become an autistic essay.
For one, Scotland is still 94% white, and hasn't seen that much demographic change. That, coupled with a misplaced empathy, and a pigheaded tribalism, mainly against England, not really for something tangible, are the main issues here.
I also think, as may be a problem in Ireland, the changes in society overall, are happening quickly, and most people are so busy working, keeping a roof over their heads and food on the table, that they don't often look up and see what's happening around them.
It takes people a while to go from "we're good people who help the less fortunate, as we were" to "holy shit they're destroying our country, culture, and killing us." Particularly when every piece of media or politician tells them they're worse than Hitler if they disagree.
Or even worse, in Scotland, tell you that you sound "just like a Tory".
I haven't met anyone who likes Humza Yousaf, and I know quite a few nationalists.
I'm going to stop here, before I go into history, both of the IRA, and Sinn Fein, and the Scottish Nationalist movement.

He is yet to release a comment in response to his remarks made on Monday night. Cllr Talukder has been contacted by Gript for comment.
He's claiming it was the child stabber he was talking about.

A Fianna Fáil Councillor at the centre of a storm over comments made after last Thursday’s stabbing attack and subsequent riots has now said he was referring to the attacker of children in Parnell Square and not the rioters on Thursday night.
Cllr Abul Kalam Azad Talukder was reported as telling a Limerick council meeting that rioters should be “shot in the head” but told the Irish Independent he was referring to the man suspected of carrying out last week’s stabbing attack and not rioters.
Shortly after, he withdrew his comments after being asked to do so at the meeting.

The politician has said he apologised to anybody who was hurt by his comments, including Fianna Fáil headquarters, but said he was referring to the person who carried out the attack and not the rioters.
He referenced local media reports and said his comments were not aimed at rioters.
“How it is published in the newspaper, it looks like I am making comments against the rioters but I didn’t do that. I said, who can stab five year old kids, is like an animal, should be punished publicly,” he said.

“Mistakenly, I said he should be shot and immediately I said, I don’t mean shot like real shot, it’s just emotional language I used. In the council, I said the same thing.
“I didn’t mean real shot, I expressed my emotion only,” the Fianna Fail councillor told the Irish Independent.
“I said anybody who stab five year old kids is like an animal and should be punished publicly, should be shot. Immediately, Conor Sheehan and another councillor told me to withdraw your words ‘shot in the head’ and I said, yes, I apologise, I don’t mean real shoot, I just mean my expression of the word.
“I’d like to apologise to whoever is hurt from my comments but it wasn’t that comments which were published.
“Immediately, in the council, I said it’s not like a real shooting, it’s just my emotion.

“It’s just a phrase.”
He said Fianna Fáil headquarters got in touch with him to say they do not support the comments made at the council meeting.
“They’re not supporting this and I respect that,” he said.
“Sorry to my party and sorry to all the people in Ireland, I apologise.”
Minister of State Jack Chambers told Newstalk earlier the party would “engage” with him.
The councillor said he has received over 200 phone calls over last night, including at 3am and 4am, as well as today.

He said some of them are “very angry”.
“I try to explain to them and I clarified my position, what I said and most people are happy and understand.
“I still think my wording - ‘shot’ - I am not supporting myself also and I don’t mean that way.
“I apologise for using that word, I am sorry for that.”
He said he hopes his comments now clarify his position.
A spokesperson for Fianna Fail said the issue has been referred to a group within the party’s Ard Comhairle.

“The comments of Councillor Abul Kalam Azad Talukder were totally inappropriate, unacceptable and the Party utterly condemns them. We have communicated the absolute unacceptability of the comments made and the Councillor fully accepts this,” they said.
“The matter has been referred to the Rules and Procedures Committee of the Ard Chomhairle.”
Honestly the quotes do make him sound like his English is not great. If he meant the stabby fuck needs shooting or beating to death all good I'd say.

Funny how this shit is always done in either Spain or Ireland and then, later, adopted by the EU for the entire continent.

Ya know I don't get Ireland. They used to be based blowing up the English and now they're doing this shit. Are they gonna charge someone with terrorism if they start mailing SD cards with Pepe memes on em to politicians?

They've always been willing to submit to superior force or loud voices. The problem for the Brits was always that they stopped using really brutal tactics at a large-scale level. Shortly after 1916, and definitely at/during World War 2.
