On a scale from 1-10, how bitchin' are potatoes?
How often do people speak Gaelic? Do many people speak it at all?

Gaelic is the second language in the republic kinda like French in Canada or however that works, Each public sign has to have the gaelic version on it by law, the language itself doesn't see that much use, There's a TV channel that only broadcasts shows in Irish and there's a few areas on the west coast of Ireland called Gaelteachts where it's the only language allowed.

This makes it sound like you can get penalised for speaking English in the Gaeltacht, which is hilariously wrong

Well it's not far from the truth. Signposts and advertisements have to be in Irish in the Gaelteacht. School is taught exclusively through Irish and I believe you have to be fluent in Irish or be Irish to live there. Of course I've been there and never had to speak a word of it, but it'd be a different story if I lived there.

I seriously doubt they internally deport people for poor language skills.

Well that's the thing, everyone there speaks Irish. It's only recently that anybody had any interest in moving to the shithole.

jokes aside, no they don't deport you for not learning Irish. The Gaelteacht though is srs biznes, it's the living embodiment of 'muh 800 years'
