You're forgetting the overall geo-political shifts at the time. This was around the time of the Sino-Soviet split. The US called a cease-fire to give China some face, and leverage that position to get them to completely split off from Soviet Russia, which they did.

So I've been reading through the article, and one of the claims is that discord itself isn't open source. I think I can explain this one, if we're discussing client side things.

Discord's app is not actually a standalone program. It's a chrome browser and its only purpose is to access Discord. The reason probably as to why Discord itself doesn't have open source code is it's not really theirs, and the license they're working with can't be changed unless the parent code's license does. But if the article's talking about server side, fuck if I know.

The whole thing with a messaging app being spyware is about as schizo as saying AIM, MSN, or Skype is spyware. Spyware by definition is a program that infects a computer without consent and proceeds to track all information stored and processed through the system, shipping it to a third party. Discord hasn't done anything of the sort and the Web 1.0 bleeding eyeball neocities autism being endorsed by Richard Stallman doesn't help its credibility.

Most "neo nazi" orgs fall under the former, they are honey traps targeting people sympathetic to fascist like ideals.
