Is cracking a password illegal?

OP is a retard.

Of course password cracking isn't in itself illegal. How else do you think security research is done?

I used to do a bit of computer repair work on the side back in the XP days and resetting passwords on laptops made up about 10% of my work.

All im talking about was when would it be illegal to crack a password. For instance if I really wanted to get into a old mincraft account whould it be illegel to crack my own password?

Always know that if all possible login attempts else fails, that the default PW is always ‘guest’

Sure that's legal. It's your account after all dumbass.

First, you should always consult a lawyer.

Second, it's generally based on permission from the proper owner. If the owner can't log into something and gives you permission, it's legal, mostly. Doing moonlighting shit can be dangerous, because sometimes you'll have a boy/girlfriend ask you to break into "their laptop," but it's really their boy/girlfriend's laptop, and now you've broken the law. Always beware, because unstable couples will drag you into their bullshit.
