Is following speedpaints a good way to learn how to draw?

Solution
"Artists" will tell you that learning the fundamentals and basics of shape and form is key to learning how to draw, however these people simply want to mislead you so they don't have any competition. Start amassing a folder of anime girl pictures and use them as reference. Learning how to draw by copying an abstract medium is how all the masters do it and anyone who says otherwise is a shill and their art should be disregarded.

Don't they have tutorials and stuff on Youtube instead? I'd figure that's better since they can explain things you can't otherwise see/know just from a recording of someone drawing.

With other skills it is fair easier and productive to learn how to do something the correct way slowly and then learn how to do it faster. I assume it's the same for painting
I am also guessing that, just like other skills, drawing well is about understanding why and how you do things.

With any skills, you can be decently above than the average by just copying people who are really good at it and make it look like effortless. But you're just above the average because most people don't try or care to try.

Unless you really commit to learning the logic and the process behind things, you will never be good among peers.

The way to get better at drawing is to draw. By all means watch others for inspiration and to pick up tips. There’s value in seeing how someone works all on one layer, or blocks out shapes a certain way and so on. But always be focused on practicing and don’t get too bogged down in little technical tricks. Imo tutorials and imitation will teach you everything except the most important thing: how to represent stuff on paper. Literally just what stuff looks like and how light and shadow and perspective influence that. That’s all practice and observation.

I prefer mainly learning things slowly, but by all means, you could learn through this. Just remember to learn basic fundamentals first before doing something like this
