Is it possible to find the original work to be too derivative to enjoy?

Sometimes there's an excellent and original work that creates many novel ideas, only for it to be shamelessly copies again and again and it's ideas are plundered to the point of exhaustion. If you read so many derivatives that you grew sick of the concepts then go read, for the first time, the original that inspired all of those copies; would you enjoy the original or find it super boring and repetitive?

i like to call it the Citizen Kane problem. art is a meme, it has a shelf life like any meme does and as time goes on people have more time to look at them. if a meme is really good enough then it will have staying power (wizard of oz) but most of them inspire copies and derivatives that eventually figure out how to do the thing better. the closest modern movie i can think of that is similar to citizen kane (fake biopic, oscar bait, high tech) would be Forrest Gump - most people probably can't sit through citizen kane anymore because its really just a historical relic at this point and it won't be too long until forrest gump suffers the same fate.
