This is something I've been thinking about lately. With regards to European countries and the United States, what is considered "normal" seems to change over time. Things that were considered taboo in the past are now acceptable in the present such interracial relationships, homosexuality, and, in recent years, the trans movement. These acceptance are considered progress but then there is always another group that cries for the same treatment e.g. Minor-Attracted Person pedophiles.

Is the idea of normalcy in the Western world just an eternal struggle between conservatism and progressivism? Leftists like to present dissent against the alphabet people as a white Christian minority when that isn't the case if you dig deeper. Can there be a middle ground for the two sides or will one come out on top eventually?

The problem with far left so called "progressive" ideologies is that they want everyone to accept, indulge in and spread these base desires of shit throwing and fucking anything with a hole. Far right Conservatism has the opposite, but ironically same problem of restraining every impulse that the impulses eventually explode but just in secret ways scarily similar to those indulgences progressives tout so proudly in the open.

Both are degenerate and something we as a society should not strive towards. I give credit to far right conservatism that at least trys to restrain the base impulses, even if they do it wrong.

The goal of normalcy should be a balance of indulging baser impulses in a safe and healthy manner while still striving to the higher dignities that technology and education have allowed us to reach. But this is the inner optimist in me, who has been suffocating to death from lack of sanity within modern society for the last few decades.

People generally think about this wrong. As if normalcy is a kind of boring, average thing.

People think that, because media is telling people to think that.

But in truth, in a healthy society and/or community, normalcy is a virtue.

It's the same upgrade on good vs. bad aristotle tried teaching everyone about milennia ago. The scale is not from bad to good. It's from bad to good to bad.

Virtues are a balance between two vices. Normalcy is a goal, not a starting point. A perfect balance to strive for, and never fully achieved.

There are a lot more forces giving pressure on "western society" than just progressivism vs. conservatism. For example, Trump's original platform was right wing populist in a way that had almost nothing in common with conservatism. So do foreign influences from either russia or china point neither towards progressivism or conservatism, nor did hillary's corporatist platform. Progressivism and conservatism were represented by bernie and the neocons and they both lost when they were running.

As for your other question. Can there be a middleground? There always is a middleground. That's just today and the status quo and where the battlelines are drawn today. I think your question might actually instead be, can there be peaceful resolution to this? And I think that is pretty much out of the window with the censorship of a recent president and the censorship of doctors added on top of that.

If you let people get away with all this intentional propaganda in a peaceful manner, then you deserve your kids being brainwashed by them against you and reporting you for not getting your vax or whatever the new schemes will be.

Doesn't mean it's not illegal.
 
Modern "society" - if you can call it that - is excessively conformist. Like so many people are the same.

And yet despite this excess conformity, modern "society" pushes some to become freakish lolcows like CWC.

It would nice if Homo sapiens wasn't such a flawed species.

A society should ideally be real community without too much conformity.
 
Everything beyond your immediate experience is in some sense constructed.

Constructed things are not necessary bad, or even necessarily false.

That said, the more complicated, abstracted and… unnatural a construction becomes, the more the danger that the whole stack just falls over.

And I think were at that point right about now. People can’t bear much more.
