Is red clam chowder a real thing or is it some bullshit urban legend?

Whenever the topic of New England clam chowder comes up, there is always someone who mentions the red kind.

Yet, I have never seen the red kind. I've never eaten anywhere that serves the red kind. The shit you get from a can is white clam chowder.

Does red clam chowder even exist?

I saw it once as a kid and it was horrifying since I expected the tasty real clam chowder and not some sketchy tomato slop. It's called "New York clam chowder" which should tell you how fucking shit it is like everything else New York, but I wasn't in New York when I had it or anywhere near there. It's awful. There's a reason the state of Maine banned this slop from being called clam chowder unless you specify it as "New York clam chowder".

It's terrible and an affront against taste and yet another reason to hate New York.

Manhattan Clam Chowder is a trashy gimmick that got popular because it's named after a place full of rich assholes.

It's real, but it's not very good, at least not as a full meal on its own. Unless you happen to like tomato soup, or can pair it with a dish that goes well with runny tomatoes - in which case, knock yourself out.

As earlier posters have said, you mostly see it at restaurants. They do actually sell it in cans, at least in New England, but it's nowhere near as popular as white clam chowder.

With clams, as with life, White is better than Red.
