Gentlemen of Kiwi Farms,

Among my group of lifelong friends, a debate has raged for 25 years and it has achieved no satisfactory conclusion: Is Shepherd’s Pie actually good or is it some concoction of bullshit that has no business being put into a human mouth?

We’ve heard the arguments and tested them thoroughly.

Yes, we’ve tried your grandmothers recipe.

Yes, we’ve tried it in it’s native land at 3 different locations of repute.

We’ve tried every combination of meat with every combination of mashed potatoes with every combination of vegetables and yes, we’ve even tried some of the stupid fancy shit these fucking bohemian Sam Francisoians have managed to conjure up. We even dared to try it with little baby corns and it’s even managed to ruin the little baby corns, and that’s very hard to do as they’re always very lovely.

I leave it to you as the natural tiebreaker since there is nobody I know that’s more autistic than to care about this or make reasonable arguments for/against it. I’ll respect the decision you make at the end of the week and from henceforth it will be so.

Thank you for your time.

I tried making it before but the mashed potatoes couldn't form a crust because my oven's shitty broiler, so it was just really warm mashed potatoes on top of ground beef and green peas. Which makes for a perfectly adequate lunch in general, it's just that throwing them together doesn't really add anything. But I wouldn't mind trying again if I could get a better bake on it

Shepherd's pie's good when it's made well. My wife makes a really good Shepherd's pie. I can make a decent one, but hers are better. That shit's good with some cheese melted on top and gravy. It can be shitty though. I've definitely had some shitty Shepherd's pies in my day. Usually either a lack of any kind of seasoning or flavour added to the meat or poorly done mashed potatoes. Lumpy shitty mashed potatoes instantly ruin that shit.

Do people not make sheppards pie with cheese? Also I use corn instead of peas.

i mean its relatively simple to make and pleasant to eat.

I believe shepard pie is the version with lamb while cottage pie is with beef. The base is generally onions, peas, carrots, gravy with mashed potatoes (some add cheese or mushroom as well in there).

I know in Quebec where i live we have a similar thing but even more basic (Ground beef, corn, mashed potatoes).

... obviously I disagree with the premise of this thread

I haven't had it, but I've had all the constituent components and they're great. I have a hard time believing it's that bad.

YES! That shit is fucking disgusting. There is no reason to mix the components, it's not like wrapping meat in mashed potatoes makes it more portable. Think hard before you go mixing corn or peas into any dish, the texture can suffer.

It is far less than the sum of its parts. It's much closer to "nuts and gum" than "peanut butter and chocolate".
