I haven't heard the term “SJW” in years because of how often they are re-branded.

Are people who aren't terminally online aware of how insane these people are? Yes. They're loud because they've been astroturfed into the mainstream by big tech.

They just seem to be getting more flack now because of sites like Twitter allowing said flack to be visible.

The SJW way of thinking is allowing governments to put in place things like hate crime laws and hate speech laws, which destroy free speech. The uks hate speech concepts have allowed the police to pick up anyone for anything.
It also allows this culture of fear of reprisals for wrongthink. That has a chilling effect on speech and eventually thought as well.
Right now SJW ism is FAR too useful as a control mechanism.
Think also of Covid - this acceptable opinion thing was pushed, and enforced by social outrage. Gen Z is really collectivist in thought but all generations bowed to ‘the right opinion’ . So SjWism is the backbone of many social control mechanisms and until something even worse is in place it’s here to stay.

Each and every one of these enable divisive assholes to take a side and fervently treat everyone who isn't in lockstep with them as enemies.

I really wonder what the total amount of expenditure on all this nonsense is, dollars and human labor both. How much time effort and resources were put into diversity/troons/etc I routinely see numbers in the billions being lost and yet they keep going.

After 6 years, since OP posted, it's finally starting to be exposed for what it is to the public, but Social Justice dying is irrelevant to actually solving any problem in the West. As a matter of fact, it's not even step 0 to making progress, as it only signals to TPTB that a narrative change is in order.
