Is Undertale actually good?

Whenever there's an indie hit I tend to be suspicious of if its actually "good" or just happens to appeal to a bunch of autists and SJWs.

I know some stuff, Genocide vs Pacifist and all that, but like, is it actually worth playing unironically?

Depends on what you consider good. It's presented in a vintage JRPG form with battles fought in a hybrid bullet hell/active gauge style and there's lots of thing you wouldn't even think about on your first playthrough. I second this:
Yeah it's pretty fun. Just ignore the fanbase
And don't watch any lore or playthrough videos either. They're going to spoil a game with frankly not too much replay value beyond your third run.
Leave your genocide run attempt for the very last.

It's pretty good, the story is good and the music is great as already said. Play it and don't interact with the idiot fans

The characters are fun, somewhat entertaining if you're new to them, and have a little something I like to call SOUL. The gameplay is fun, even if limited, while the music definitely makes up for the short experience.

Everything about it is full of soul, something that I can't say about literally any other game that was made in the modern era. It's obvious people actually gave a shit trying to make the game instead of just churning something out and throwing it at people hoping it sticks.

I don't trust people when they say they "like games" but "don't want to try Undertale because of..." it's a fucking game who's base inspiration came from the Mother series. There's not a whole lot one can complain about, aside from the game itself being pretty short, and at that, linear as hell.

I was lucky enough to have played it before it blew up and became a mess, and I ended up really enjoying it. Just pretend it's some random indie game on Steam with no notoriety whatsoever and you'll probably enjoy it

Great game when treated like a game and not some holy object to be given to the pope. It's a fun rpg with writing and humor Inspired by earthbound and paper mario so if you can gel with that style you're in for a good time. Just avoid literally everything surrounding it, beside maybe music remixs, cause it's just people ruining the game or getting scarily overattached to pixel skeletons.
Any media that goes for the, I guess "quirky" style, will always be surrounding by the worst people trying to force it as there personality when it's always hyper embarrassing outside of completely controlled pieces of media and even then...
See also scott pilgrim and most indie games

It desperately wishes it was Earthbound, so probably just play that instead.
There's a lot of those, as well as people trying to shove indie game pegs into the same Earthbound-shaped hole because they think that relation makes the game "good" by default.

I don't see the resemblance, at all. The music's not similar, the creative processes for the music aren't notably similar, the stories aren't similar, any underlying themes are completely different, and the gameplay of the two games are fundamentally different in every aspect.

Even the humor is different (and less timeless, arguably-- I recall the "Tsunderplane"), in part because of the way that the world is built, and in part because Earthbound wasn't ever built for the obnoxious rabbit hole-tier fan theorizing that Fox built into Undertale.

I can get if he was thinking of Earthbound a little while developing the game, but it's a good thing that it's actually very distinct from Earthbound-- it means that it's its own game and not a pale imitation made by a guy with no original vision.

What if I find the characters annoying and the game preachy?

It's a good game but not that memorable beyond some music. The meta twist is already overused today, having the game force you into "evil" (ie, self defence) and then yell at you for it is obnoxious. And locking content and berating you for seeing it is childish.

The game is good despite its godawful fanbase and then some, which you can ignore. Me personally, I find it flawed as balls and wouldn't consider it to be great, but I still liked it.
