Culture Is weight loss primarily about exercise or primarily about starving oneself?

L | A (Translated with ChatGPT)

When it comes to weight loss, it's often a matter of 'to each their own.' Indeed, some people say that adjusting your diet is key, as controlling calorie intake is crucial for losing weight. However, others believe that exercise is the true path to weight loss, as the sweat and relief after a workout make the body and mind feel relaxed.

For us, weight loss should be a comprehensive process. Not only should we reasonably control our diet, but we should also emphasize the supportive role of exercise. Balancing both, combining diet control with exercise, will better help burn calories and achieve weight loss goals. In short, eat a little less and exercise regularly—this is the real path to losing weight!

This topic has sparked a heated discussion among netizens.

"I do 16+8 (intermittent fasting), don’t drink beverages, don’t eat snacks, I even skip dinner and keep exercising, but I still haven’t lost any weight at all 😂"

A small amount, right?

"It’s all about saving money. Outside of the three meals, I don’t eat anything except water. No snacks, no drinks, no fruit. Every night before bed, I’m always hungry.😃"

Will I rebound if I eat snacks and fruit in the future?

"I feel that exercise isn’t very practical😂 I haven't lost any weight for a month, and my mindset is a bit blown. Although it might be due to water retention and a slight change in dimensions, it's still easy to get discouraged."

Many people also can't stick to exercising.

"My husband and I have been exercising for three to four years, but I genuinely don’t like exercising. First of all, I have no athletic talent at all, and I can’t do any sport correctly. Secondly, no matter how much I practice, my stomach hasn’t changed at all, and I don’t feel any soreness. In this situation, why would I like exercising? I’d rather rely on starving myself."

No way! I feel like my stomach should change in a month.

"I haven't eaten rice for ten days. I generally eat corn, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and vegetables, along with skipping rope about 1,500 times a day, sometimes over 2,000. I've only lost 15 pounds😭

Don't you eat protein? This is obviously not right.

download (5).jpg

"When it comes to weight loss, just starving yourself to death will do—that's the hard truth."

"I haven't had a full meal in half a month. I really want to eat something!"

This kind of weight loss feels like there's no light in my eyes.

"Controlling diet = slow weight loss
Controlling diet + exercise = fast weight loss
Not controlling diet + exercise = fast-running fat person 😣😣😣"

Insightful!

Weight loss is not merely a physical competition, nor is it a solo performance of hunger. Cherishing our health, we need to find a balanced path. Reasonable exercise, scientific dieting, and a customized weight loss plan are the way to go. Don’t let weight loss become a sacrifice in life; instead, let it be a bridge to a better life.

The purpose of losing weight is to enjoy life more joyfully, not to lose weight through asceticism. Choose a weight loss method that is both healthy and enjoyable, so we can reach our ideal weight while enjoying life!

I don't get it.
I was 180lbs and fit and athletic 10 years ago, 38 now, 6 feet tall, and now all I do is lay around and drink nothing but whiskey and Coca-Cola and just don't eat anything but chocolate and candy. There's no exercise unless you count climbing the stairs to piss after having several drinks. I lie in bed all day on disability reading the farms and getting drunk and stoned.
I weighed myself earlier this morning and I'm now 136lbs.
I wish I weighed more but it's almost impossible for me to gain weight. I guess I'll never understand the bigger guys sufferings but it works both ways.
Genetics plays a big part in weight gain, and some peoples body's are able to survive a bad diet for longer than others.
Apart from that, I also think that you severely underestimate how much fatty's eat. Its not just the candy and crips, its 3 meals, sandwiches, and a large amount of candy and crips. Most fatty's eat the lions share of their calories when they are alone, so its not clear to the outside world how much they actually eat.

"starvation". One of the reasons I hate fat people is that they have this habit of insisting that anything less than their status quo level of overindulgence is "starvation". No, you disgusting hog, you are not starving yourself by going from a surplus to 500 cal deficit which would drop only around 1lb per week. When you're so overweight that even a 500cal deficit for a year wouldn't put you at a healthy weight you don't have the right to claim anything short of eating nothing is starvation.

I'm pretty sure that's what the difference is. Like I gotta hype myself up to have a proper meal cause it really hurts to eat normally. I usually have about one full meal every 2 or 3 days and the rest is just chips and pop and liquor and weed.
I know it's not good for me and when I try to eat properly I listen to some hard metal and watch some UFC just to get jacked up and ready like it was some sporting event. And even then there's a good chance I'll puke it all up.

For people who have too much weight I'd suggest things like raspberries, pineapple, blackberries... just that kinda good stuff I love that'll eventually get your stomach into a proper order.
I just can't handle heavy foods, I'll puke. Unless maybe it's a nice rare steak on the right day then that's heaven...
I'm considered anorexic by Ontario government and I'm able to buy whatever food I want and I don't want to lose weight but I just don't like eating, I find it gross. Call me autistic but that's just how I feel personally.
It makes it really hard to go on dates cause girls love to Chow down and I'll have like two French fries and they'll think I'm low key fat shaming.
Like just want to make it clear so everyone knows it really does go both ways. I'd rather be a fat bastard full of life than some skeleton who can barely climb a set of stairs or risks losing teeth from malnutrition

I went from 430 lbs to 190 by counting calories and regular walks. You can still eat ice cream, pizza, pasta, etc. but those are calorically dense so just eat less of it. Eat 1300-1700 calories a day depending on your size/age/sex/activeness and you will lose weight.

As a former Great Big Fat Person, I am especially annoyed by people who don't even try.

What I do when we have steak is cook twice as much then put it in the fridge. I have it in a Earnie the next day or just by itself. Or with cold potatoes. You could have steak one night, then the next day slice the rest on some nice bread for a sandwich? Try to have some stuff on hand that’s a bit more nutritious - even just stuff like some boiled pasta salad , pasta, mayo, tuna seeetcorn kind of stuff? Or potato salad?
Would a bit of basic meal prep help? So you’ve got stuff in the freezer to pull out and defrost instead of junk?
There’s these great things called souper cubes, they’re fab for saving extra portions in. Just find three or four meals you do find ok to eat, cook a load of it, freeze it, eat them on rotation? Have them in the freezer ready. Keep it simple and don’t over face yourself with fancy or heavy stuff. Pretty much anything is better than booze and sugar.
You could spend a few hours in a few days just making and portioning out basic stuff. A soup, maybe spag bol, lasagne? Spag bol sauce you can tart up with beans and chilli or just have with pasta or rolled in a tortilla.

Calories are money. Your body is the bank. Unlike real life, you are trying to overspend and go broke, and your body, systems & behavior are extremely Jewish. Make less, spend more, let's GOOOOOOO chat, Bossman style

Truest weight loss advice I've ever heard was "You can't outrun a bad diet."

Eat low calorie nutritious foods, move around a bit. See what happens.
You don't even need to eat low calorie foods, you just need to keep your portion sizes appropriate. It's easy as fuck to do now, because a lot of "treat" foods come packaged in tiny individual serves.

The liquid calories are what get most people. It's extremely easy to drink 500 calories, whether it's soda, alcohol, you name it. And because it's liquid it doesn't make you full for more than maybe 15 minutes. I think if everyone stopped drinking anything but water for a year, the obesity rate would go down by a quarter right there.
I'm so mad that orange juice is almost 200 calories a cup.

Its all about portion control and what you eat. Simple as. You can do walks or jogs once a day and you'll slim down even faster.

500 calorie deficit a day which should feel pretty minimal or 3500 calories a week. This is 1 pound a week if you're lucky. Starving yourself which I'd think is entering the threshold of like less than 50% of your daily caloric break even point is not actually helpful or sustainable.

Eat right= Get thin.
Exercise= Get strong.

You can do one, both or neither depending on what you want.
Isn't it very hard/impossible to gain muscle mass while being at a calorie deficit. Yes you could gain muscle and calorie surplus one week and eat a calorie deficit the next to lose weight.

They aren't even starving either. Their body has enough energy stored in fat that as long as they were taking a multi-vitamin they could go months without eating anything and not starve. They won't even feel bad once they get past the first few days and their body adjusts to not being pumped full of glucose all the time. Starving is when your body has to start breaking down muscle and organs for energy because there's no fat left.

Just stop stuffing your face with slop and eat like a human being. There is no reason for anyone to ever be fat.
