A Syrian national who has been fighting alongside IS forces in Syria has been spotted in the Netherlands and visited the Balie debating centre to watch a film about the Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently collective, the Volkskrant said on Friday.

The 31-year-old man was recognised by activists from the collective during the screening, the paper said.

Security service sources told the paper that the man is ‘a serious case’ who travelled to the Netherlands under a false name and is being monitored by the AIVD. They were aware of his presence before the Balie debate, the paper said.

Thousands of people who fought with IS are now being displaced since the area under the organisation’s control is crumbling. The Volkskrant said that the authorities face a dilemma about what action to take: should they continue to monitor him to learn more about his network or should they step in an arrest him?

The man cannot be deported to Syria because it is considered a war zone.

Some 280 Dutch nationals are thought to have gone to fight alongside IS in Syria and Iraq and around 50 are now back in the Netherlands. But this is the first time a foreign jihadi has been spotted, the Volkskrant said. The Balie incident took place on September 14 when the man was recognised by activists in the audience. ‘We tried to take a photo of him but he didn’t want to and ran off,’ collective member Hossam Eesa said.

Balie director Yoeri Albrecht said he and the staff were shocked by the incident. The presence of the activists had not been mentioned on the debating centre’s agenda because they are under constant threat from IS and live at secret addresses in the Netherlands and Germany, the Volkskrant said.

A veteran fighter on a government watch list, how long until he launches an attack and authorities are confounded as to how and why it happened? Should we start a pool? I'll take Dec 7th. I suspect he'll want to start the Christmas season off with a blast. The cats out of the bag that he's there and I'd be surprised if he/his cell doesn't move up a timetable or launch an attack while the cops scratch their asses and wonder if they should arrest a terrorist who's cover has been blown.

Boo-fucking-hoo.

That's something that pisses me off to no end. If he's a fucking terrorist, just throw him back into the shithole that he came from. The only relevant question should be whether deporting him back to Syria will make him wind up at the frontlines again or not and if so: imprison him either there or in the Netherlands.

Why the fuck do politicians treat this as some sort of moral greyzone dilemma? If the guy is a terrorist, lock his ass up until you know whether you send him back or not.

I bet kebab can get away with anything short of genocide in Netherlands
Yyyyyep.

During the Pokémon Go hype, two mates of mine went to the local park. At night. Stupid, yes, dangerous, yes, they fully owe up to that now. They were assaulted by three Turks. The Turks were already rather notorious amongst my social circle so they easily found out their identities and locations but the police refused to do anything with it. In this case it's not so much a "the cops are protecting kebab" issue as it is a "the cops refuse to handle any crime that can't be solved with a ticket and a slap on the wrist" issue though.

So why aren't you out robbing banks and raping people?
A spokesman for the Dutch police actually commented once on that they "prefer to put their energy into solving serious crimes"*. They only look into less than half of all reports that come their way and solve about 20%, and reportedly that number's decreasing every year. I assume just about anyone would consider robbing banks and raping people to be fairly serious so that's what's probably putting me off from doing it.

*And traffic tickets

The answer to this quandary seems quite clear to me.

They don't have to deport him and they don't have to arrest him. Problem solved.

Never fucking say that, because when you do, you're setting the precedent that what happened that night was acceptable. Getting assaulted in a completely unprovoked altercation should not be considered a fact of life on par with getting kicked by a donkey.

So wait until they get really drunk and pass out and set their apartment on fire. Justice isn't hard when you're willing to do the work.

I'm not sure to what extent you're joking (or not) but we have one guy living here, some kind of notorious criminal, who is so despised that they set his house on fire every few months or so. Maybe we could take something away from that.

If you're gonna do it, bash a window in and throw the fuel inside when you light it.
