This is something I have wanting to talk about for some time yet I did have a place where I could have civil conversation about it. In today's society, we are brought on the concept of acceptance and tolerance of everyone to a certain degree. With the widespread use of social media, we can form groups of people that share the same beliefs and opinions that we have.

But now we have become so accustom to this like-mindedness that we instantly disregard opposing viewpoints with the whole "I'm right, you're wrong" mentality. And throwing around labels such as "racist", "sexist", "bigoted", etc. is so common that we are quick to get up on our high horses to look down on others. We have become so smug and arrogant that we make excuse when we exhibit attitudes that, if others had done it, we would be the first to point out as prejudice. How can we claim to be a better, open-minded society when treat those who don't share the same views as us with utter contempt?

I think that you have perfectly explained it in the title. Now that being an open society is considered to be a good thing people with radical ideologies are trying to appropriate it in order to look better to the general populace just like communists and fascists appropriated the word "freedom"
