Air Raid Siren Removel (Arbroath) - March 1993.jpg

In 1993 due to the british governments perceived view that the threat of nuclear annihilation was over with the cold war the siren network that had been in place since the WW2 was removed. although some were kept around in areas that were prone to flooding (some where used recently in the bout of flooding the uk's been having) they are mostly an extreme rarity these days

Wanna feel old? I realized that we are as far removed from 2008 as the movie Donnie Darko, filmed in 2000 was from the time period it was depicting, 1988.

Apparently we were thinking about the same kinda things today

Earlier today I was thinking about how distant into the past GTA Vice City seemed when it was new, with it taking place in 1986 but coming out in 2002.

Then I thought about how that's only 16 years, and we were equally as much in the future from '02 back in 2018. So, an equally distant period piece released today would take place in 2004, the year Half Life 2 was released and GW Bush won his second term. And you could already get cellphones with internet access and HDTVs, they just cost a fortune at the time.

I've also thought about Vice City as well, how we are now further away from 2002 than 2002 was from 1986, that just blows my mind.

But the Donnie Darko thing is especially crazy to think about, you could make a period piece movie set in 2008 now and it wouldn't be any longer ago than Donnie Darko was trying to depict, but does 2008 really seem like it was that long ago?
