I actually got the chance to play it. As you might expect, it's currently only on Switch, and I beat it in about six hours, give or take, because the remakes are babby mode compared to the original NES release.

The remasters are... Odd. They're basically re-dos of the mobile games, which feature redrawn sprites and really improperly used cuts from the DQ Symphonic Suite, just like the Mobile game does. The main difference is that unlike the Mobile release, the graphics aren't badly-compressed trash. They're still redrawn and don't look particularly good, and there's a reason Squeenix does not do ports this way anymore.

The good news is that the game is still Dragon Quest, and it does still feature the new retranslation, which is way more faithful to the original game. It's still enjoyable for what it is, with better visuals and controls than the mobile release, but it doesn't offer you anything you don't have already if you do have the mobile release, other than the ability to play the game natively in HD, where it still looks mediocre because the game's graphics are redrawn.

The SNES Port is still the best looking version of Dragon Quest 1, for what it's worth.

This is probably why the upcoming DQ3 remaster is being done as a completely different experience top to bottom:

Oh right the Switch ports! I definitely agree they aren't the best, but play well enough regardless. Still nice to have them portable with a built in controller.

I really should look into the SNES ports. They're fantastic for sure, and I have high hopes for the HD-2D remake after having played Octopath Traveler and the Live A Live remake.

If you want what is (basically) the same game, and only slightly less graphically intensive, I can recommend the GBC port of Dragon Quest 1 and 2.

It makes really great use of the hardware and is, IMO, the best-sounding of the titles while having most of the best of the SNES port.

the GBC port of Dragon Quest 1 and 2.
Oh yeah those! I actually have those somewhere around here. If they're similar to the SNES ones I may just tear through those.

I do remember playing the hell out of 3 that way, but sadly never finished it. Got the great idea to switch both casters to sages at the same time and got bored grinding.

Is there just a shit ton of grinding for coins in dragon warrior 1 or was i just playing like a retard as a child?

In the NES Version, gold and experience drops are way lower. The Gold Golem, the most valuable enemy in the game, monetarily, gives around 200 Gold. Late-game enemies will give around 40-50 EXP, and the Metal Slime, the most valuable enemy in terms of experience, gives 115.

The remakes make the game way less grindy. Enemies in general are around twice as valuable. The Gold Golem gives you 650 gold in the remakes, while the late-game enemies can give 100 or more experience. The Metal Slime will give you 775 in the remakes.
