He always had some weird obsession with nukes, in The Terminator, Skynet launched the nukes, The Abyss had the subplot of the crashed nuclear sub, Terminator 2 had the infamous nightmare sequence and True Lies was about stopping terrorists from nuking south Florida.True Lies is a remake of a French film called The Total. So Cameron simply saw the film and remade it in English with a more American themed protagonist and villains. Almost nothing in True Lies was actually written or created by Cameron. So expecting a similar style story or movie out of him is not realistic. Unless the French make The Total 2 you will never see True Lies 2.
Cameron was always a hardcore environmentalist whacko hypocrite. Who would lecture people on set about the dangers of dairy products and driving SUVs. But meanwhile is vacationing on megayachts and pumping out endless plastic Terminator and Avatar 'made in china' merchandise by 11-year-old slave workers. His oil consumption with research vessels over Titanic wreckage sites probably eclipses what an entire small American town will burn through in a lifetime.
This is not even 'save the whales'. This is 'save the negroid featured blue savage aliens'. Save the cartoon furry objects of degenerate thoughts.
I always figured hey, he grew up during the Cold War, maybe it made a big impression on him, plus nukes are obviously pretty dangerous.
But he segway into lame "save the trees" type hippie environmentalism has been sad to see, I always hated that kind of crap, even as a kid.
That and Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies (which would have been the first Cameron movie I saw now that I think about it) were among the first times I can remember thinking "hey, ladies are kind of interesting"But do they have the technology to bring back her tiny underpants from Alien?
Pretty rich coming from a guy who made his career with movies starring someone as testosterone laden as Schwarzenegger, eh?He grew old, emasculated and probably has early-onset dementia. He went from being a director that made testosterone-fueled movies to calling testosterone a "toxin".
He is so obsessed with the sea that if he ends up buildings himself an underwater biome to fuck off from the rest of the world and live off algae smoothies for the rest of his life, it would not surprise me in the least.
I didn't hate Titanic despite it's flaws, but I think it was such a monumental success he truly lost touch with reality.
