Rewatching that awful behind the scenes video, and what's his fascination with "epic videos"? Why does he consider "epic" to mean good? What happened to this just being some guy in his basement being unnecessarily angry at video games?
Actually, yeah, what the fuck happened to that? Now the nerd's going to fucking las vegas to enact a parody, the jungle to meet some celebrity cameo, getting kidnapped by shrek cultists or whatever the plot of that fucking awful episode was, etc. Sure he went out of the basement sometimes, but not to this extent. When was the last time the show explicitly acknowledged and played off the fact that the AVGN was just some guy in a basement and not Tripod-Man the superhero, who is suffering from a chronic lack of time?
Those "high production" or "epic" videos as he's been calling them really aren't funny either. Like the Wizard of Oz episode and the Bugs Bunny fights were funny in spite of the shitty costumes and production values, or maybe it even added to the humor. But it's like James doesn't understand what's actually funny to his viewers, he thinks what people liked about those episodes were that they were "epic" and as a result he has to go all-out with VFX and practical effects in order to make an "epic episode" but he missed the point.
First time I noticed it was the Rob the Robot episode. The VFX stuff is funny for a little one-off gag like the F-Bombs but at a certain point it just gets tiresome. Honestly some of his best videos were his shorter videos with shit production values, but he got too big for his britches and decided he needed to constantly make use of all of this unnecessary shit. Board James did the same thing toward the end, but it was more creative, like Mr. Bucket or the Dream Phone episodes.
