For starters, Joji didn't nuke his relationship with his fans. So instead of them seething that he was going to re-invent himself, they accepted the fact that he is changing for his own sake.
there were still plenty of shitty games, but it was generally a more ernest shitty game than the crap we get now. a lot of it was just high difficulty or mechanics that are dated in retrospect because later on people figured out little QoL shit. there was still a bunch of licensed crap pumped out too quick to end up any good. the 80s did have a lot of a wild west of gaming things going on where you had a lot of people just making shit because they could and it getting out there. the wii was a shovelware dump but I feel like it's actually gotten worse with the advent of digital storefronts in general. granted, that shit isn't on store shelves like your average wii title but modern consoles e-stores are entirely bogged down with mobile games and low effort garbage as the ease of making/publishing a game for and on them has gotten simpler.
I think the amount people are expected to pay for ports of old games or the used retro gaming market is absolutely insane, but in general I do agree with you on emulation. that said, it wouldn't matter to the average guy who's never really played whatever game because they wouldn't have played it before anyways. I'm a little spoiled in that regard because I've been on the everdrive and ODE train since the early 2010s and dabbled in FPGA but if I was just talking to a regular joe I would probably recommend emulation every time because they could utilize extra features, and cut costs entirely if they have a computer or just buy a cheap handheld or something for a one time cost and play up through the dreamcast good enough.

The BTS video cemented his cow status for me. It had a lot him passive-aggressive engaging with his critics (trolls aside, most of them are former fans who just hate the Slobwave era and want a return to good content or him retiring the AVGN) and making himself look like a total retard.

It's funny. I know of some people who were disappointed that he stopped doing the Filthy Frank show, myself included, but I've never heard about anyone being mad over it. The overwhelming consensus is that he's just doing other things now, and that's okay. I think it helps that Joji is just a really likeable guy, and, as far as I know, he never really was part of some big controversy. Which is funny, because he was involved with some of the most fucked up shit you can watch on YouTube.

He less "reinvented" himself and more "internet goldfish brain shit happened with people so now frank vids only come up in talks when people frame it as a"FORGOTTEN DARK PAST" for clicks or cancellation attempts. You know, ASIDE from the people that show up to places he's at in pink guy outfits and other people who've just casually followed him for years now. There's also the people that find out about him through the joji stuff and immediately discover he did comedy vids and music on youtube a few years ago but don't treat it like it's some lost ancient lore. It's basically if James stopped doing AVGN due to some health issues and focused solely on something he was able to keep doing which in that hypothetical would be rex viper i guess. I think the most weirdly obvious yet overlooked thing with "filthy frank" is the early vids had him talking like a normal-ish guy and the fact the name and his outfit and appearance is blatantly based somewhat on Frank Grimes from the simpsons.
The Glover and Goonies 2 episodes were pretty good
