I don't know why James can't just straight up say "Hey I don't really like doing the AVGN that often and I hope you guys can understand that I want to try new things"

It's a fairly big risk with no return to flat out admit "I don't really care about this anymore." when it is your biggest money maker.

If people are still tuning in even when he doesn't proclaim it, why bother proclaiming it and risk alienating or pissing off viewers further?

I wonder what he'll review next

I don't really know why he ended Board James. I remember enjoying those. Wasn't so big on the "muh harrer" storylines, though.
He has to be an "auteur" and a "film curator" over everything and make a lore out of everything, when he can make just silly episodes of Board James that doesn't even remotely connected to each other

Alright, I watched it and gave it a like, but personally the Shrek cult stuff dragged on for too long. Also, for anyone who didn't see it yet, be advised that the game review portion of the video is like 10% of the whole thing -- the rest is all just Shrek references and skits. The game itself is quick and he only plays it for like 2 minutes.

Is it a rule that everything he reviews now has to have some dumb conspiracy/cult tied to it? It was humorous the first few times but now it's just getting repetitive.

Honestly, this whole episode feels like it's 7 years late. The references to stuff like "Shrek is love, Shrek is life" and the ogre puns were more cringe than funny.

It was cool that they got the guy behind Shrek Retold to play the cult leader though.

I get that it's a Game Boy Color game, so there's not much to it, but if that were the case then he the fatsos could've made this a Shrek games episode. There's tons of them of varying quality that James the slobs could've covered like the not very good OG Xbox one that had character designs by Todd McFarlane of all people, and the surprisingly decent Shrek SuperSlam and Shrek 2 game, and that's just scratching the surface.

But y'know, no time, muh kidz. Muh Rex Viper.

could've made this a Shrek games episode
EXACTLY. For long episodes of this magnitude, they should have reviewed all Shrek games, like when James reviewed every Mortal Kombat 1 port or every Berenstain Bears game in single episodes. This should have just been like a long mega episode of all Shrek games, and then have the whole cult thing as a wrap-around story...like how the Berenstain Bears episode discussed the games then had the Mandela Effect gag as the tie-in story.
