Adam Marcus has made it clear in recent years that the Evil Dead prop cameos in Jason Goes to Hell, namely the Book of the Dead and Kandarian Dagger, weren’t mere Easter eggs but rather links between Evil Dead and Friday the 13th… at least in his own mind. As far as Marcus is concerned, they exist in a shared universe, as he again explains in a new chat with Syfy.

If you go by Marcus’s own canon, Jason Voorhees is… well… he’s a Deadite.

“[Co-writer] Dean Lorey and I thought everything had to come from a place of logic,” Marcus explained to Syfy. “In the first movie Jason is a little boy, thirty years dead and trapped at the bottom of a lake. By Part Two it’s only two weeks later, and this kid has grown two feet. So that’s the logic I have to build off of?”

He continued, digging into the Evil Dead connection that came into being as a way to make sense of Jason’s nonsensical mythology…

“When we were pre-producing the movie, Bob Kurtzman and the guys at KNB said we’re gonna do the effects on the movie. So I got to go on Sam Raimi’s set for Army of Darkness. I asked Bob if Sam would lend me the Necronomicon for Jason Goes To Hell. I let Bob in on my secret plan and knew I couldn’t say Deadite or Evil Dead in the movie because Universal owned the rights. If I just take that prop and put it in the Voorhees house, and use the Kandarian dagger as the thing that kills Jason, what I’m doing is setting up a mythology that Jason’s mom wanted her son back so badly that she made a deal with the darkness. So she reads from the Necronomicon and brings about the resurrection of her son.”

“So now the fact he lived at the bottom of the lake and grows two feet makes sense.”

Again, these aren’t exactly new reveals from Marcus, but it’s interesting to learn some more insight into the reasoning behind the Evil Dead props cameos in Jason Goes to Hell.

Fun fan fiction from a Friday filmmaker, if nothing more.

Seeing how Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday came out a full twelve years and seven sequels after Friday the 13th Part 2, it’s likely that even the nitpickiest of fans would have long moved on from this slight inconsistency between the first two movies by the time Marcus made the fix. Still, there’s something to admire in the guy’s efforts to introduce a wider mythological context to Jason’s various killing sprees.

Speaking of which, it’ll be interesting to see whether the director goes all the way with his Creighton Duke spinoff idea. Lord knows, with Friday the 13th in legal limbo and Ash vs Evil Dead cancelled, someone needs to carry the torch for this unofficial cinematic universe.

Great, so when's the Ash vs Jason movie? Never? Guess it's irrelevant then.

It's a neat inside joke, nothing more. But I know the internet has a big enough supply of autism that this Important Fact is being added to wiki pages all over the place :c

Oh wait ash vs evil dead got canceled? Just as well, it was getting flanderized to hell.

The final season was not bad, but what a disappointing way to end the character and Campbell's involvement in the series.

Jason is a shit tier horror movie villain. Oh no! He's slow as fuck and wears a hockey mask! Of course they would try to attach it to a better IP, but fuck that. Keep your dumbass hockey zombie away from evil dead.

You watch F13 movies to see people job it by getting squished in a collapsible bed or impaled on a ship's mast or having their face frozen in liquid nitrogen. If you want actual character in your monster, go watch a Nightmare or Hellraiser movie.

I'm wondering if he always planned it, or did he just say that because he read the comic Freddy vs Jason vs Ash

I wonder what the director of F13 Part VI Jason Lives says about this, I'm pretty sure he had a different vision of what Jason is since he planned to have his dad appear:

The original F13th movie was built like a camp fire story. You can't get any meaningful characters out of something like that.

Found this on a forum, not sure if reliable, but what this user claims heard from the director of F13 Part VI:

http://forum.f13game.com/topic/19143-i-talked-with-tom-mcloughlin-writerdirector-of-part-6/

So I was happily invited to a Horror Convention known as "Day of the Dead" and I had a chance to talk to the Director and Writer of Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives himself Tom McLoughlin I was talking his head off about the movie and the franchise and I managed to get ALOT of Answers from his best-known knowledge since it has been about 33 years since the movie so I will make it simple and easy with the two questions I think you guys will like!

Question 1: "Do you believe that Jason is a Deadite from the evil dead series? or connected to their universe"

Tom Answer: "Uh No I do not believe Jason is an uh Deadite at all just a type of Zombie that still has his brain connected in a way that he still keeps his individual personality and emotions this was what the company also envisioned for the character."

Note: Yes for those who didn't know.....Jason is known as a "Revenant Zombie" he isn't a DEMON!

Question 2: "What was Jason dad initial real name? was it Elias? and did Jason supernatural abilities truly come from his father?"

Tom Answer: "No...It was never the intention of calling his real dad name Elias but I believe in my book it should have discussed this." *Tries to find the original page in his novel but it was the wrong one they placed on the table for him* "Well if you ever played the Game and had listened to the Pamela tapes, it talks about how she discussed being raped that was the original lore of what I wanted and that I have written where the man who had raped Pamela was a man of rage and hate and that she could see it in his eyes and that this is the real father of Jason and that this unknown character was the reason why Jason was so supernaturally powerful, and that the real reason Pamela married this Elias Voorhees was because of his large muscular body build and that Pamela only married Elias out of fear of Jason real father coming after her or Jason, and because of Elias abusive nature to Pamela had caused the deformity of Jason to explain that the abuse caused it."

I never fanboyed so hard in my life meeting this man and the other Part 6 Cast including Thom (Tommy),Kerry Noonan (Paula), C.J. Graham (Part 6 Jason) and Tom Fridley (Cort) and I even talked and got a signed Machete from Steve Dash and Met up with Derek Mears was amazing asking them questions and getting to know the real them!
