Can’t speak for every game but almost every bloated mess i can think of is due to texture creep. Borderlands 3 had up to 8K gravel textures for mountains in the background and it’s why the game on switch was 16 gigs, about 1:10th of the PC size.Who's got that screenshot explaining how most of the size of games these days is because of online bullshit like data collection? It's some ridiculous amount where the "game" part of the game is very small, but all the other crap is what makes them all so big.

Games optimized for hard drives will have multiple copies of the same thing located throughout the disk because it improves load times somehow.
Probably the biggest insult to injury is that for as shit as that game was, 99.99% of people never got to see what was actually taking up half their hard drive and it’s LITERAL FUCKING ROCKS
