"The Crew" is not the inciting thing for this. Throughout ross's videos over 10 years he's been pissed about games being killed, and over 6 years ago he made this video https://youtu.be/tUAX0gnZ3Nw. In an interview here https://youtu.be/sJuKpajV1XI he says that "The Crew" being killed was just a good example for what he was already gonna do.
Ross said that The Crew being shut down was however the catalyst for him to actually start the SKG movement, since Ubisoft is in France his first move was to organise players who owned it to submit a whole bunch of complaints to the French national customer prote agency (whatever it was called, I have no idea).
Later Ross committed to his battle plans and started the EU initiative and the UK one.

Signed it. I had been putting it off for months, was about time. Got an extra 10 or 20 from acquaintances. Let it be known that we on the internet at large hate furries. Fuck you, Maldavius. Go fuck your pooner in the ass. Your shitty Undertale ripoff scam game or your bs nepobaby career won’t be your legacy. Stop killing games will.

Doubt the initiative will do anything at all, but a win’s a win.

Remember gamers, it's not over until we have AT LEAST 6 million signatures, we need to be able to say, without exaggeration, that Jason Hall literally got holocausted by gamers.
It kinda is, as it was the thing that REALLY got him into overdrive about this stuff. The crew was what made something snap in him to push hard
I'm pretty sure that Ubisoft being French and getting sued over the Crew is what made him realize this is doable.

Wearing my age a bit here, but do any of you remember the World Opponent Network, mPlayer, and GameSpy Arcade? I’ve been seeing chatter that even back in the late 90s and early 2000s that multiplayer games could be shuttered. People have always managed way to revive the master servers so people could use server browsers, though likely not without a concerted effort.

I just thought about it, i know its an ever increasingly diminished part of game sales but how will STG effect console fags?
pc players can just modify code if server side shit happens but beyond dns redirecting if you have a ps5/nintendo system you're fucked. Microsoft is pretty much making their stuff pc so they will probably be accommodating but with how nintendo is i imagine even for third party shit loading up private servers past release will chap there ass (and thus, be funny).

I am retarded, so if you watched his 1h video where he dissects Mald's twisted views on the initiative you'll probably understand it better than what you'd get by listening to me, but the gist of it is that devs will have to engineer games in a way that it will be possible for anyone who bought a game to run their server, even if for console that means renting their own instead of hosting it locally, if I'm not mistaken. As long as devs give you the necessary software bits, even if stripped down to the bare minimum because of, for example, some services that the devs/publisher don't own and have bought a license for, as long as the game is in a playable state (vague wording is intentional), we're good. I'm no expert but I'm thinking something like skill-based matchmaking. If it's from a third party, and not from the devs/publisher, they simply won't package it with the EoL bits, the game is still in a playable state though, so they're good.

As I said, watching the video will explain things better, as my understanding is probably partial or wrong somewhere, especially technicalities, but I hope it's enough to give an idea!
