Bruce Stark is an American jazz pianist based in Japan. For the past 10 years or so he has been focusing on written ("classical") compositions, and unfortunately his recent forays into improvisations has lost the sensitivity and subtlety of his earlier efforts. His earlier albums, like Shadow Bright and Song of Hope, are the ones to get. This is the opening piece from Shadow Bright.

Listening to the CD Dick Hyman in Recital. The piano sound is not extremely top notch as the recording claims, probably because they didn't record the sound as Hyman played, instead the piano keeps track of his keystrokes and pedalings with mechanical means, and only afterwards did the recording team transfer the piano to a studio and let it repeat the performance, player-piano style. The liner notes claim that this method frees the artist of worries and anxiety and gives the artist more freedom, but I think something is lost in this process.

I usually prefer smaller, more intimate bands, anywhere from a trio to a sextet, than big band stuff (Miles' fusion period aside), but this album is a definite exception to that

Sinne Eeg is a Danish jazz vocalist who also writes most of her material. Her unaffected voice is attractive, but I'm even more impressed by her rapport with her band.
