Mike Tseng (曾增譯) is the most talented jazz pianist in Taiwan, if not the whole of China. He plays with such sensitivity and breathtaking tone color. Keep this name in your mind; he is destined for big things.

"Chromatics - Blue Stillness"

I'm currently having my mind blown by Chick Webb. The guy suffered an injury as a kid that crippled his back permanently, but he still decided to become a drummer and went all out with his orchestra until he died in his early thirties. He would regularly pass out from the pain after his concerts. That kind of dedication just to want to play music (well, and get paid too, I guess), and to actually properly kick ass in doing so, is pretty darned inspiring. Also, Ella Fitzgerald started her career singing in his orchestra.
I'm trying to track down all the live recordings I can find, since his pounding energy comes out better there than in the studio sessions I've found so far.

I follow the Xerf Xpec channel on Youtube, which posts an endless amount of strictly Japanese easy listening/pop/jazz fusion albums, so I was surprised when they posted a Masayuki Takayanagi album, since his style of jazz was the complete opposite of easy listening. Apparently he did put out a straight bossa nova album at one point. Actually, as I type this out, I realize he probably spent part of his career playing traditional style jazz before exploring the deep end, I don't know that much about him except for some of his noise projects. Anyhow, maybe I'm just biased because of the music I already know of him, but I can't help but feel like there's an eerie atmosphere in this album, despite it being easy-listening lounge music. Well kinda easy-listening, you can hear a bit of guitar dissonance here and there already.

Stumbled upon this, while browsing YT today:

A wonderful tribute to Gershwin. As this is the closest I've been to live jazz, since early 2020, it hit extra hard.

Highlights were the Porgy and Bess medley (That transition into Porgy (I Loves You Porgy) @ 38:10. Feels) and Prelude 2 @ 1:08:40.
I'm very particular about Rhapsody in Blue and unfortunately this version, at the end of the stream, was a bit meh imo. Not bad but nothing special either.

Other than that, a highly recommended stream for anyone who has 1.5 hours to spare.

And here's Porgy played by Bill Evans. Fucking fantastic.

Jun Miyake's first two recorded albums are jazz masterpieces and also very hard to find physically.

Some of my other subgenres of Jazz would probably be Jazz Fusion and Bossa Nova. I'll post some of my favorites for all jazz here:

My favorite jazz radio station diversity hired a tranny who can’t handle the job. The other hosts provide insight in a relaxing tone. Tranny dj never sounds at ease and only stiffly lists basic facts in his tranny voice.

So Wayne Shorter died this morning at age 89. One of the last key figures from the golden era. While he's probably best known for making fusion with Weather Report, I always preferred his modal output:

RIP to one of the greatest saxophonists of all time.
